My fiance and I are throwing an engagement party for ourselves to get both of our families together. Its going to be a BBQ, so its not going to be formal....very casual. Does anyone know of a good place to find invitations for this. Ive been looking just about everywhere and I have not found anything?????

You should never throw a party in your own honor.  The only exception to this is your actual wedding.  If no one else throws you an e-party, you just don't get one. 

Reason being - e-parties are gift giving occasions to many people, and it's not appropriate for you to solicit multipile gifts for the same event (your marriage).  The wedding already carries the social expectation of a gift. 

You CAN however just host a "meet the family" bbq.  Don't call it an engagement party, don't expect gifts, and it's fine. 

I don't think you need particularly formal invites for it.  Just google for "BBQ Invitation" or "Picnic Invitation" and see what you get.

Our circle doesn't give gifts for an engagement party, so I don't see anything wrong with throwing your own.  However, if you're planning on a BBQ, why not just invite people to a BBQ to get to know each other?

ok so first off i should have said the both parents are giving us one...but its our original idea to have an engagement party to get both families together since all of my family lives out of state and at the same time celebrate our engagement. This is somthing very casual, everone knows that no gifts ARE NOT EXPECTED and DEF ARE NOT BEING ASKED FOR. This is whats wrong w/ people in this world....they throw parties to see what they can get out of it. It shouldnt be assumed that this is why im having an engagement party. Our intention was to get the family together to celebrate only our engagement but in a fun way. We are outdoors people and wanted to celebrate in a way that was fun but relxaing and casual. so thanks for the idea but it is an engagement party. And i agree jenn, you should be aloud to throw yourself one!

Even if you don't get gifts for it, it is still rude to host an engagement party for yourself.  It's a party in honor of you, not thrown by you.  You don't throw a party to honor yourself.

Your statement above contradicts itself.  "We are not throwing it...OUR PARENTS ARE."

This is immediately followed by "and we can throw one,"

You can't and still be in good taste.  You can throw a random party which is just fine.  But you can't throw a party in honor of yourself while still following proper etiquette.  Even your wedding isn't really in your honor since the reception is for the guests.

You can use any type of invitation to indicate that your parents are throwing an engagement party for you and your FI though.  Just do know that anyone invited needs to be invited to the wedding.

I know that the people i invite have to be invited to the wedding... people i invite are family ONLY so obviously they will all be invited. And above i didnt contradict myself i was just saying that although my parents are giving us one, if they werent we could have one for ourself if we wanted one cause its not going to be anything big. Its a BBQ/ PIG ROAST something we love to do to celebrate our engagement w/ our family. I dont see why this is causing a problem...i just posted something to try and find a good place to purchase invitations!!!

Your original post says you're throwing it for yourselves.   Clearly you're going to do whatever you want anyway, but just wanted to point this out. 

Anyway - if you want to throw a party - do so.  Invite whomever you want.  If they choose to congratulate you on your engagement, whether in conversation, with a toast, or with a gift - wonderful.  But putting the "Engagement Party" title on it is rude. 

As to your assertion that "this is way out of line" - your attitude and insistance on doing something rude is what's out of line.  No less than three posters have given you the same information.  We're not saying don't have the party.  We're just suggesting that you change the name of it.  That's it.  Have it - have a blast!  I haven't been to a pig roast in years, but I love them too.  Just don't call it an engagement party and you're good to go.

As for where to get invitations - since it's such a casual gathering, I'd look at Target, your local party supply store, etc.

now this is the mother of the bride-to-be speaking.  we her parents are giving this  party for the two of them..  i will agress it was daughters mistake of not making sure that everyone knew her parents were giving her this party,  since she was only asking where you may find a variety of ENGAGEMENT PARTY invitations...i don't think people should assume the worst in everyone..my entire family is not the type to ask for gifts..this is a very relaxed and casual engagement party.  society seems to think that you must do whatever to get whatever you can from people.  i know what is proper and what is not...and your negative comments are what is  rude here...  this is a site to ask for help or suggestions....to solicite your opinion whnt not asked for is also very rude...i know proper etiquette involving a wedding....leave my daughter alone in this matter, this is enough of this subject!

Please get your own login if you are the mother of the bride.  I believe sharing them is inappropriate. 

Keep in mind - this is a public message board, and people are free to post their opinions as they wish.  There are no rules that limit a response strictly to the questions asked by the OP. 

Further - I have given multiple suggestions on finding invitations.  As this is a very casual party, I am unaware of any vendors who specialize in engagement party invitations.  I highly recommend google.

Perhaps you should tell your daughter to make sure to word her posts appropriately then so as not to be confusing.

Remember, it isn't about presents that makes throwing one's own engagement party inappropriate (assuming that she still was - now we know differently).   Throwing ANY party in honor of yourself is inappropriate and goes against etiquette because it's inappropriate to say, "Come celebrate ME/US!" (and this even includes throwing your own birthday party).

However, if hypothetically speaking, she were to throw a random backyard BBQ / Pig Roast, you can go to places like VistaPrint and create your own casual invitation depending on the background and wording.

Now that you're going to be throwing the party, you can do that as well.  You can even google "Picnic Invitations" and see what is available since that would be rather casual.

PP's have answered your questions on where to get your invitations and were only trying to make it so you don't seem incredibly rude by throwing yourself an engagement party. I don't understand why you can't just call it something else.

well what kind of mother would i be if i didnt care about my family!!!  i don't worry about proper spelling or punctuation when dealing with people who have done everything but give advice...i don't need my own page, because i try to stay away from rude and childish people like the kind i have come across....also if you don't like that i have come to my "daughters rescue" than dont respond...she is old enought to take care of herself, i just didn't think it was proper for total strangers to comment on anything in her life, especially when you know nothing of it!!   it is and will be an engagment party.  she was never giving herself one to begin with.  so let this alone...grow up and find someone else to bitch at!!!
