Wedding Invitations & Paper

Wedding not until 2014, when to order?

My wedding isn't until May 10th 2014, but we are booking the venue 2 months from now, once the venue is booked is it okay to start ordering stationary, or should I wait till closer to time? I know I won't be mailing it out for awhile but the more things I get done early the less stressful, but I'm also scared of ordering too early.
** I don't believe that old cliche that good things come to those who wait. I think good things come to those who want something so bad they can't sit still **

Re: Wedding not until 2014, when to order?

  • I'd wait until closer if only because new styles would be offered.

Also, even if venues are booked you might have changes come up regarding the time, or you might want to include additional information about hotels, etc. that you don't have yet.

I'd order no sooner than a year out from the wedding.
  • I wouldn't order them until probably mid summer, 2013.   You can order and send your STDs anywhere from 6-9 ,months before the wedding. So, I would think ... maybe, May, 2013 to order those. And maybe order the invitations in September or October of 2013.  You won't be sending those until March, 2014... so, I wouldn't order them much more than 6 months in advance.

You just never know what's going to happen in the next 2 years.    Your venue could have a fire/flood.  You could get an amazing job and move to New York.  You may take a day trip and find another venue that you LOVE.     I would wait for a while.   Get all of your planning done, make notes, make lists.    :)
  • Don't order until about 6 months before. Things may change and new styles will come out.

I agree with those that said six months before. So much can change. I've heard stories of dates changing, venues being sold/under new management, even flooding or burning down.

Many invitations can take about a month to come in. Could be quicker, could take longer -- it depends on a lot of factors (printing method, layering, the vendor itself). But you don't need to mail them out until 6-8 weeks prior to your wedding date.

Save the Date announcements can be sent out earlier. Six to nine months is a good time frame for these. They do not have to match your wedding invitation ensemble, but if you already have something picked out, you can find something that matches or coordinates.
