Invite Etiquette..."and Family"

So I had a question about etiquette.  I'm not doing inner envelopes because I am having pocket invitations.  We are inviting our first cousins, who are under the age of 18, is it wrong to say Mr. & Mrs. John Doe & Family on the outer envelope.  I mean some of aunts/uncles have 3-4 kids and that seems like alot to write out on the outer envelope.  All these etiquette websites forbid "and family," but I don't see what the big deal is, especially if your not using an inner envelope.

What do you think?

Where I live, "and family" would mean "party of 15" because the couple who is invited would bring their 3 or 4 kids, plus her parents, plus his parents, plus her sister and boyfriend because they went to school with the bride, etc.
