large families, small ceremony...HELP!

FI and I are planning a small ceremony (~50 people) with our closest family and friends.  Since we both come from large families, how do we invite some family to the ceremony and leave everyone else for the reception?  Is is even polite to do that?

  • There is no way to do this b/c it is rude. The whole point is that people are coming to witness your marriage.

Invite the number you can afford for both locations

Thanks.  That's what I figured.  I don't want to be picky with our guests, especially since there going to be so many...it's more my FI who wants the "private" ceremony.

No it's not.  Either have a 50 person wedding (ceremony and reception) or invite everyone to the ceremony.  50 people is not a "private ceremony" so FI is wrong.

You have two optioms: Invite everyone to everything or have a truly private ceremony with immediate family only.
