How to address when you have no inner envelope

We only have an outer envelope so I was wondering what the best way is to suggest that single people may bring a guest?

I've seen it before where its their formal name just followed by guest. ex: Mr. John Smith and Guest Address here Etc etc And then on the reply card a line for number of people in case they don't want/don't have a guest to bring.

If you know the name of the person they are bringing, address it to both parties. If you don't know, then putting "and guest" on the outer envelope is ok. We also wrote in the names of everyone on the M______ line on the response card and put "and guest" there as well. Then people filled in the _____accepts/declines spaces with their numbers.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

On our RSVP card, we wrote
(  ) Seats have been saved in your honor."
before we send them out, we will fill in each blank with the number of people invited per party

It is fine to write Mr. John Doe and Guest on the envelope.  If possible, you should find out the name of the guest first.  If the person truly doesn't know who they will be bringing, then writing "and guest" is fine.
