Wedding Invitations & Paper

Mailing dark envelopes

I am thinking of doing either RSVP or the Invite envelopes in Grey. I read online that sometimes the post office charges more for dark envelopes. Has anyone had a problem with this? We are most likely doing square invites so would there be an additional charge to the upcharge for the square envelope? thanks.

Re: Mailing dark envelopes

  • The additional charge for square envelopes is 20 cents.  I don't know about the dark envelopes, but FI says it would be included in the same 20 cents for being non-machinable.

  • According to ehow:
      Black Envelopes
    1. Black envelopes with white text not only give off a very classy look, but have the same amount of contrast as a white envelope with black text. So you should have no problem sending this, correct? Wrong. According to the Post Office, "A black envelope with a white delivery address is not acceptable for OCR processing." OCR refers to their automatic system.
I have also heard they might put a whit barcode sticker on them.

  • I also thnk it depends on how dark of a grey you choose. A lighter grey probably would have any problems. Problems seem to oocur with envelopes too dark to see the cancellation stamp or when the contrast is not high enough for the machines to read the address when sorting.

  • I live in Canada so it may be slightly different here, but I mailed out Black envelopes with pink or silver writing and so far everyone has been recieving them.
  • Thanks!

  • I just sent out my save the dates in black envelopes with silver writing on them - spoke to a few people at the post office (just to be sure everyone said the same thing): they all said it wasn't a problem mailing dark envelopes, and everyone has received them. It's only if the envelope is square or if the flap is on the "side" (so it's vertical instead of horizontal) that it becomes a problem.
