inviting a guest + one

How do I address an invitation envelope to a guest who's allowed to bring a plus one?

Do I address the envelope as Mr Smith and Guest? Does that look a bit weird?

If people don't live together I can't address it to them together but I want certain people to know they're allowed to bring a guest. How should I do it? Thanks :)

ha, i think we'll keep it simple and go with only one envelope! seems like it would get heavy otherwise. already we have the invite card, rsvp card with envelope and map/directions sheet.

The purpose of the inner envelope is to keep the invitation and inserts together in one place. It also tells the guest who, specifically, is invited. People often throw the outer envelope away without even thinking about it. If you are using pocket fold envelopes, inner envelopes are not necessarily needed because the pockets function the same as an inner envelope by keeping al the materials together. The drawback is that if someone throws away the mailing envelope, you may get some people asking if they were invited to bring a guest or their children.
