Groom to be is a "Dr." - does that go on the invite?

So my fiance (groom to be) has a Ph.D., so he is professionally referred to as "Dr. so-and so." Should "Dr." be included in front of his name on the invitation? For example:

Mr. and Mrs. so and so request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter
Jane Doe (my name)
to
(Dr.) John Smith (his name)...

etc. Should his name have the Dr. in front of it, or not? Thanks :)

Re: Groom to be is a "Dr." - does that go on the invite?

  • Traditionally, the groom does have a title in front of his name - but Ph.D's are put at the END of their name. (John Smith, Ph.D.) In other words, PhDs are not addressed as "Doctor" in print, even if that's how people address them in speech. If you were to put "Doctor John Smith" on your invites, you'd be saying that your fiance is a medical doctor, not that he has a Ph.D.

So, no, he should not have Doctor in front of his name on your invitations.
  • No.  For social stationery, you only use Dr. if you are a medical doctor.  Either way, on a wedding invitation it is not necessary.
  • FI and I are both (medical) doctors, but we didn't feel necessary to refer to ourselves as such on our invites.  Our guests already know we are, I don't need another way to remind them.

  • Thanks all for the tips. I thought it would be best to omit it, and fiance agreees. So it's out! Thanks!
