A girl H went to high school with did this. I understand the convenience factor, but I find it quite tacky, personally, especially if the wedding is formal or black-tie.
Also, I know that for her, there was a problem with older guests who don't use computers. They ended up having to call over half the guest list simply because the older people didn't understand how to RSVP online or through email. If you have a younger guest list, though, this problem would probably be alleviated.
**i'm a little drunk on you and high on summertime**
A wedding is a big deal. I think invitations that are on paper are called for. They can match the formality or informality of the event, but you have to consider that not all guests use e.mail. Also, if your guests are like me, they'd read the e.mail, delete it and then forget about it expecting a formal invitation in the mail.
I once received an e-mail invite from a former co-worker. The names of everyone in our agency was in the "TO:" field and I knew she didn't like some of those people. So I felt like she didn't really want me at the wedding and had just sent it to the ex-corkers because she felt she should. I felt it didn't even rate an RSVP.
i recently got a message from my aunt on facebook asking for my email address so she can send me an invite. it was a pdf of her invite and info card. she also sent paper invites out to other guests. she had both mail-back rsvps and email and # available to call. being a bride myself i totally understand cost and convience factor and didnt think anything negative of it. i think it totally works for some of the guests but i wouldnt do it for all of them.
