Wedding Invitations & Paper

Send Invites Early vs Save The Dates

My fiance and I are planning our wedding at a hotel in the rocky mountains a few hours away from our hometown. Half of our guests will be coming from out of the country and will need to get passports to come to the wedding. Also, the hotel only offers a group discount up to 1 month before the wedding.

I think save the dates are pretty necessary but my fiance absolutely hates save the dates and wants to just send the invites 6 months before the wedding. I'm afraid people will lose the RSVP cards or forget. Its a formal wedding so I was hoping to not have to send out email save the dates (Grandparents don't have email)but my fiance is very stubborn. Advice?

Re: Send Invites Early vs Save The Dates

  • Tell your FI that sending invitations that early is just plain rude. Sending STDs is the way to go here.
  • Send STDs, 6 months is WAY to early for an invite.  Order nice postcards from Vistaprint- you can usually find an offer for 100 free- and send those out instead of emails.  This is one place where your FI is definitely in the wrong.

  • People are going to lose them and if they don't, will definitely forget to send the RSVP cards.

Your FI is definitely wrong....STDs are pretty cheap to make.

    Good luck!

This.  Your FI is going to have to get over "absolutely hating" (how does one "absolutely hate" a piece of paper?) STDs.  Six months is ridiculous.

  • Definitely send STDs. Like PP said you can get them very inexpensively. We sent our invites 8 weeks before our wedding and some of our guests still managed to lose them....I can't imagine what would have happened if I had sent them earlier.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I would send STDs.

Our wedding is in July 2012 and we are already starting to think about STDs because about 90% of guests will need to travel 2-3 hours.  I think it's only courteous to let them know as soon as possible so they can make plans.

Also, Vistaprint is currently having a huge sale on postcards (100 for FREE) and oversized postcards (50 for FREE).  If you think you are going to go with STDs, I would definitely get on Vistaprint's email list, as they are always having sales.

If you could get STDs for free, you would need to pay shipping from Vistaprint (or wherever you order from) and postage to mail them to your guests.

Just FYI, you can always find a promo for Vistaprint's free postcards and if you don't have one, just post on DIY board or look at Jena's VP bio.  You really should never feel rushed to buy anything from them because you're nervous of a sale "running out"

<div>STDs should go out in the 6-9 month range.  That's plenty of time to book a hotel.  If you send them too early, you run the risk of them saying "Oh well I have a year (or whatever), I don't need to take care of this now," and then they forget entirely.  Just a thought.</div>
