I have this same question! Only it's 5:30. My first instinct is to put evening...any time after 5 to me means acceptable dinner time which means evening, at least in my head. I'd say you could probably go either way and nobody would notice, but I also think of weddings as more formal if they are in the "evening".

Technically, anything before 6 is afternoon. So, 5 would be "in the afternoon." I agree, I think of 5 as evening so I avoided the situation all together by just putting "Reception Five o'clock."
"in the evening" or "in the afternoon" or "in the morning" are not appropriate for invitations. There are only 2 times per day that the clock reads five o'clock, and no one will show up to a wedding at 5m.
No, it's not inappropriate to includ "in the evening" or "in the afternoon" etc. It's generally not necessary, but there's nothing wrong with including it.
