Is five in the afternoon or evening?

I'm trying to figure out if I should write 5 o'clock in the afternoon or 5 o'clock in the evening.  Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Is five in the afternoon or evening?

  • I have this same question! Only it's 5:30. My first instinct is to put evening...any time after 5 to me means acceptable dinner time which means evening, at least in my head. I'd say you could probably go either way and nobody would notice, but I also think of weddings as more formal if they are in the "evening".

  • Definitely going for more formal, so evening it is!  edielaura - they are my inspiration for my wedding shoes :)  Probably doing a purple shoe instead of the blue.

  • Before 6 is afternoon.
  • Technically it's afternoon, but for all practical purposes, I consider it evening. I don't think most people will notice one way or the other.
  • Technically, anything before 6 is afternoon. So, 5 would be "in the afternoon." I agree, I think of 5 as evening so I avoided the situation all together by just putting "Reception Five o'clock."
  • "in the evening" or "in the afternoon" or "in the morning" are not appropriate for invitations. There are only 2 times per day that the clock reads five o'clock, and no one will show up to a wedding at 5m.

    Just say "five o'clock".
  • No, it's not inappropriate to includ "in the evening" or "in the afternoon" etc. It's generally not necessary, but there's nothing wrong with including it.
