Wedding Invitations & Paper

Save the date and Invite at the same time?

Can you send save the date magnets and invites at the same time?
Our wedding will be Aug.31 2012 and I know its a little early but there aren't many places for lodging were our wedding is and people should book far in advance to ensure they have a place to stay especially because its a holiday weekend with labor day...
So Can I send them both together?
Or send one and the other later?
What do you think?

Re: Save the date and Invite at the same time?

  • I agree with cebrady.    It doesn't make ANY sense to send both now.

Save-the-Dates are so your guests can, well, save the date.  It also helps out-of-towners make travel and lodgnging arrangements.  Generally these are sent 6-9 months out.    I would recommend you send these out soon since your wedding is a holiday weekend.   It would help a lot if you could block off some hotel rooms for your guests NOW and include that information with your save-the-dates (or put it on your website, and put the URL on the save-the-date).

Invitations are for YOU to get a head count.  You really won't need final numbers until a few weeks before the wedding.  Invitations are generally sent out 6-8 weeks before the wedding, and you will want RSVPs about a week before you  need to get final numbers to your caterer/venue.   This way you can call people whose RSVPs you haven't received.

  • Ditto PPs, ESPECIALLY about blocking hotel rooms.

You are probably thinking that guests will wait until they get a real invitation in order to book their hotels.  This is not the case.

My guests will have all their plane tickets, car rental and hotels booked well before they get their actual invitation.  The STD pretty much sets all of that travel planning into motion.  I also included my wedding website on my STD which plainly states that we highly recommend that they book lodging very soon because the summers are popular and things book up quickly.

Booking a block of hotel rooms is also an idea, and those usually stay blocked off until 30 days before the wedding where they are released back to the public.  I would put that kind of invormation on your website so people know.  You an also include in the invitation an insert about your room blocking as well.

Do not send the invite and STD together as the other ladies said.

^A B&B probably won't. Are there a lot of them in the area of your wedding? Are there going to be enough places for guests to stay? This concerns me.

Edited to add: You should call around to the largest ones you can find, but your best bet might be to list, on your website, some good accommodations nearby to look into.

  • It depends on each B&B; you'd have to call and ask. Good luck!
  • I made STD post cards and put hotel block and airport information on the back, so people could start to book their travel in advance.

    Thanks again!
I will call some and see if they can block them out.
There are enough as we are having a very small wedding max of 20-30 people max.
    Thanks!
Save the dates I will work on very soon! - this week
