Another Jr. question

Must there be a comma before junior? I haven't seen it on etiquette sites and I was just about to order my invite samples that read:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith junior

Is this acceptable?

Re: Another Jr. question

  • It's more traditional to use a comma, but you can go without if you prefer.
  • I think junior should be a comma.  However III does not use a comma.

This came up with my fiance's father. He has never used a comma before Jr., and the lady at our invitation store told us it was improper. However, I looked it up on some style manuals I used in college, and they say fewer and fewer people are putting commas before Junior and that it's ok now to leave it off. I also see names of different attorneys on letterhead everyday, and many of them do not use a comma. However, I would use a comma to be safe though.
