I just got engaged last week and we picked a date that is about 6 months away. Does it even make sense to send out Save the Dates? Or should we just send our invitations a little early?
Up to you. You could send them since invites usually wouldn't go out until six to eight weeks before. Or you could just spread the word to anyone who might be coming in from out of town so they could start making travel arrangements.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
Do you have a lot of out of town guests that would need to make travel arrangements? If so, maybe send out save the dates just to those out of town people or more distant relatives/friends that don't know the event details yet.
If you do STD's send your invites out at 6-8 weeks (I prefer 8 weeks).
Otherwise, send your invites out at around 10 weeks and you'd be fine.

309 Invited so far! 142 Are ready to party! 125 Will be missing out! 42 Are driving me crazy!
I didn't do save the dates. Most everyone we know already knows since we live in such a close knit community. The only family traveling is my mom's side and it's only immediately family so they all know already. I just found for me it was a waste of money to send them.
I got engaged a month ago and I'm getting ready to send out Save the Dates for our August 2012 wedding. Like others are saying they aren't required, but I wanted to let people know of the date in case they wanted to plan their vacations accordingly since August is a big vacation month. I had someone on Etsy design mine and I LOVE them, and they were only $.50 each.

It can tell your guests in advance, so they can arrange their time to your wedding.
Congrats!
