Argh....WR

So earlier this year I bought a nice ivory coat to go with my dress online during j.crew's end of season sale. FI told me to put it away because he knew if I wore it, I would spill something bright red on it.I took it out today, and there's a hole in it! Like, definitely not one that I made. It's a punched out circle about 2mm in diameter with sharp, defined edges. So I called and they said they can give me store credit since it's no longer made, but they looked up the order to give me the price I paid.Umm...it was on sale, and I definitely can't afford a full priced j.crew coat. I don't know what to do. I was really excited about it, which sounds silly.

Ehh, it is 2mm? Like the size of a pen mark? Where is it located? I'd still wear it and then sell it on eBay or whatever when I was done with it. Can you just fix the hole? I'm sure it won't be visible in any of the photos. It sounds really cute! :)

I was thinking the same as Kwynn - where is the hole?  Could it be repaired without being too visible?  That is really, really small and I doubt it would be noticeable.

It's more like the size of a little stud earring. I have no idea what else to compare it to. It's right on the front near the waist. It's going to be my actual winter coat, and things like that drive me insane.

Can things like that really be patched? Wouldn't there be a seam where the new fabric was inserted? It's in the middle of a large piece, not on a seam.

If you got a really good deal on it, keep it and wear it. Coats get pretty messed up anyway over the winter, so I say to stitch the hole very carefully or have your seamstress do it.But my clothes are in disrepair and six years old, so don't take my word for it!

Could you do a fun scarf around the waist, to cover it? Maybe in your wedding colors?

Is it wool?  Maybe a moth got to it while it was in your closet.  Could you try a Burlington type store, you may even find the same one there since it was discontinued.

Bel, what type of material is it? You may be able to do a patch with matching material from the inside using a bonding agent. You'd need to pull the seam of the lining to be able to get to the hole, but that shouldn't be too difficult. At that size, a matching patch wouldn't be noticeable (except by you since you would know it was there). If it is a material with a nap, you'd just have to be careful to make sure the naps matched. However, if you try to stitch up the hole, it will be more noticeable as it would create a pucker.

I don't think a scarf will work. It's a short jacket. If it were long, it might. It's definitely not moths. It's ivory wool. I know not to try to close it, because that would be obvious. I get what you're saying about the cut out; that might work. I'll take it to my seamstress and see what she thinks.
