LOL, OMGWTFBBQ at your friend on FB last night telling you you were going to have mutations and deformities for eating tilapia! I see you just read it now; it was hilarious. My DH eats it all the time; it is tasty. (And my DH is just fine, no mutuations!)

/butting in, per usual - We constantly eat tilapia! It's cheap, easy, and very mild - it barely tastes like fish! There are SO many easy recipes to do with Tilapia.

I know, I just responded on there with my thoughts: I'm not FDA expert, and I don't know how tilapia live or what they eat, but it tasted ok to me, and people eat it every day without dying or becoming mutated. So that's good enough for me! It was parmesan crusted- pretty good, just had to get over the fact that I was eating fish. I have nothing against fish, just never grew up eating it. So it was an adjustment, but I think I'll be making it again.

Kim - I was excited for you because I knew that you weren't a fish eater. I also didn't realize there was so much hype about tilapia and it made me want to know more since I am careful about what we eat.

I know, I feel like looking up some info now...off to google to check this out. Let me know if you find anything particularly insightful!

Tilapia is one of the safest fish to eat. it is plant eater, which means that when it is farmed, it does not produce the mercury toxins and other toxins that meat-eating fish like tuna or salmon produce. In addition, it is one of the most environmentally-friendly fish. I love when people with no clue try to post wrong information.

Yea, in my quick google search, I found nothing to be super concerned over. I did find this article, which talks about the debate scientists are in over tilapia, but mainly affecting those with heart problems. Here's the article if anyone if interested: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/07/080708092228.htm As I say, everything in moderation.

I had to run to a different lab for a second, but I was going to say that everything I found echoes what N had said. Which, I kind of thought was the case since it is in a lot of books for special diets.

Yeah, sorry but your friend is full of it. I read his post and his response to mine. It's not even worth responding. Did you like the tilapia?

I just looked at your FB page and the comments about Tilapia made me lol :)I am not a fish eater either.  My family ate fish occasionally growing up, but the smell of it has always grossed me out so I've always avoided it.  DH made Tilapia for me right after we got married, and now we eat it a few times a month. I love how mild it is, and that it can be easily seasoned/breaded to add tons of flavor. Its actually the only fish I'll eat at this point!DH made some delicious tomato and basil crusted tilapia last week - mmmm! He topped it with a little fresh grated Parmesan before putting it in the oven. So good.

Yes, I did like it! I'll have to go back to FB to catch up...who knew this would turn out to be so controversial! This particular friend definitely has the "I know it all" mentality at times.

It is not like you posted "Does anyone know anything about tilapia? Is it safe?" on your FB wall. Then his response would make sense. But who just starts commenting on someone's food choice so negatively? I'm going to wait until someone says "I'm eating pizza tonight" on FB and then go off with "Pizza is so unhealthy. You will probably die from it. The fat will clog your arteries..." etc, none of which is true :)

Oh, this particular friend will definitely give unsolicited advice and opinions. I should note that he majored in environmental science and has done some internships/jobs in relation to that. So I suppose he considers himself an expert. Glad I could provide some entertainment, lol.

I couldn't beleive that post either.  I was kind of in shock-does he have a tilapia pet or what?  It is a very safe fish.  I'm like a lot of you girls-I never ate fish growing up but when FI and I started dating he made it for me, and it's one of the few fish I'll actually eat now.  When I get home I'll post that recipe for you Kim!

LOL, I just had to check this out for myself.  How bizarre!  I have to say that people are just not that convincing when every other word is a swear and there is no sentence structure ;)

I felt bad doing it, Kim, but I had to take a swipe at him about the rat feces.

Don't feel bad Shannon, he deserves a swipe at. :-P I just read that on FB. Oh, and when I turned on my phone at lunch I had a text from him about how amusing this FB convo is and that it's fueling his day. Wow. This has gotten kind of crazy!
