First Cake Consult!

FI and I are going to our cake consultation later this afternoon - 2pm.

We're already pretty much planning on going with the bakery unless their prices are just way out of budget. We printed off a few pictures from their website of what we like - keeping it simple (for our wedding, we feel simple is better - plus it'll help keep the cake cost down some rather than if we had a lot of intricate designs on it).

I was kind of hoping FI didn't want to go (that sounds bad lol) - the idea of a cake consult is boring to him lol but said he would go, but I kind of was hoping he'd rather stay home because I also want to ask about a groom's cake - I want to surprise him with one.

But I guess if the price is right and we go with them, I'll have to call back on my own time and talk with someone about possibly doing that.

So, I'm really excited. I've been looking forward to this all week. Especially as they have a supply store that I've been dying to go through since baking is also a hobby of mine, so it should hopefully be a lot of fun!

  • Have fun!  My FI hasn't been super involved in the wedding planning, but he came to the cake tasting and had a great time- if food is involved, he's happy!  We're also going with something more simple- buttercream with a few well placed sugar orchids.

  • ooo fun! We didn't have to do a cake tasting yet because our cake comes with the venue costs so we will do it closer to the wedding.

  • The consult went well. We took in 3 pictures of cakes that they've done and picked two and kind of combined them a little. We kept it very simple.

I was surprised at how cheap the estimate is! I heard good reviews from them locally and then as well on TK - From what I read on the reviews, they were considered 'middle of the road' so I was expecting it to be $100-$200 more (but then again, the others may have chosen more intricate designs).

We basically gave colors, estimated number of guests, design, base/stand, etc.

She actually sent us home with the samples instead of trying them there, which I really liked. It allowed us to sit at home, comfortably, and discuss our honest opinions on them without worrying about offending if we didn't like something. And the samples, imho, were generous. I was expecting tiny squares lol. Also their website said they'd do 2 samples, but she sent us with 3. We both had a generous sample and still have half a thing left over for each flavor.

If we book and put down a deposit, we'll get 4 more of our choosing.

We weren't crazy about the traditional flavors that we tasted, but we tried a raspberry swirl that was absolutely delicious. So we're considering booking and trying out 4 other swirls and mix-ins.

  • Glad it went well!  I like that she sent you home with flavors- we did ours with the baker present, but we got to try a lot of different cakes.  I think we've pretty much settled on the banana chocolate cake.

  • ^^Banana chocolate sounds delicious! Sadly ours doesn't offer that, but there's definitely a lot of fun flavors! How many did you try?

I can't wait to pick our other 4. We plan on trying cookies 'n creme and maybe  a strawberry swirl. I'm trying to convince FI to try pumpkin (he loves pumpkin!) - so if he really likes their pumpkin, then if I end up doing the groom's cake, I'll have it done in pumpkin (I'm calling back to discuss a groom's cake - which will alter our regular cake a bit - mostly in the layer sizes which are currently 16-12-7).

I'm thinking we should do at least one traditional flavor for those who may not like the other flavors.

I tried some more cake this evening, and I do like the traditional flavors more than when we initially tried it. FI said he only wanted more of the raspberry lol but I left some for him to try of the traditional flavors. When originally tried the cakes, they were still very cold and stiff from being refrigerated. I told him to leave the cake out of the fridge (doesn't require refrigeration) as I think we should try it when it's not cold (as it will be more true to what is being served and will probably taste different - which held true!).

All I can say is that it is 100x's better now that it has come to room temp, so I'd like him to give it another shot - which means I'm sure the raspberry will be just brilliant (even more so than when we first tried it lol).
