Accounting 101

I know someone posted this a day or two ago but holy crap my FI is driving me crazy! He has no sense of budgeting AT ALL! To the point where I had to make him an online account and monitor it...wth!! Today I looked and he spent 40 bucks at Chick Fil A so I texted him and he supposedly treated his crew to lunch, umm seriously?! We have a wedding to plan buddy, make your crew some sandwiches AT HOME!!

Thanks for letting me vent Lol

Re: Accounting 101

  • yeah, that's hard.
My exH used to be terribly with money and do exactly what you describe. He'd go to QT and drop $20 on lunch for himself. Seriously?? At a GAS STATION?! Ugh. That's like 19 hot dogs. LMAO. Makes no sense to me.
Patrick is way better with his money but it's mostly from my prodding. He's never been with someone who was 'good' with money before, so it took him a minute to adjust.
He and his exwife were together (not married, but together) for over 10 years, got married, bought a house, had a kid, etc, and never had a joint checking account. Makes no sense to me, but whatever.

  • Some men are better money wise than others. My Fi and I have separate accts and budget ourselves accordingly.

we have separate accounts right now too. Our only joint acct is the wedding fund. HOWEVER, being engaged and having been married for 3-4 years with a child and house purchased together are two completely different situations.

  • We don't have a joint account yet, if he don't get it together we never will lol. He never had to worry about spending before (I guess his exes didn't care) but he's learning. Every once in awhile (like today) I have to kick him in the butt!
  • My fiancee used to be horrible at budgeting andpaying things on time; honestly so are his parents so that's where he got it from.  Sometimes people just are never taught the whole budgeting thing.  We now have a joint account and he knows exactly when things need to be paid and how much money is going into savings; it took a while to get him into the groove of saving and realizing it's more comfortable to have a cushion in your bank account rather than spending every penny as soon as you get it.

  • I had a talk with the fi about money and since he SUCKS at putting money in our savings account I'm making him pay all of our deposits lol. He can deal with paying a bill but putting money in our savings he is just no good at.

  • FI is very good with money and saving it- actually, he boarders on cheap at times, but he's always generous when it comes down to it.  I completely trust him with money.  Currently we have separate accounts, but after we get married we plan to keep separate accounts and having a joint account to pay bills with.  His account will just be for his own spending money and mine will be for my spending money and my business.  He's going to be the one to pay all our household bills because he's just better at that stuff and I have my business bills to worry about and keep track of.

  • Sometimes my FI is the same way with money.  He's never really had to save before and I've always liked to have a nice savings set aside in case something happened.  Having to save up for deposits for our apartment when we get married has changed all that.  He's getting better though.

Y'all are right, not everyone's taught how to budget.  And we'll be combining into one joint account after we get married, just for ease of paying bills and for his pa school stuff he'll need.  I like the idea of separate accounts as well, but it all depends on the couple.

  • FI and I don't have a joint checking account, and we don't plan on getting one either.

We have a joint savings account that we both automatically put money into every paycheck, but for every day expenses and whatnot, we keep our money separate. I cut him a check every month for my part of the mortgage.

TBH, he handles money better than I do. He's 40.. I'm 28.. so he was on his own for 10 years+ before I came into the picture, so he's had much more practice than me. Plus, I still have $40K in student loans that I'm taking care of... it just makes more sense for us to keep our money separate.
