Does anyone start an e-mail off with Dear so and so anymore?

I recieved an e-mail from my FMIL concerning the shower she wants to have for me but it started off Dear Becky and ended with Thanks in advance Diane.

Idk if it's because I am still getting over this cold and in a funk still but it seemed so weird to me. I hope she wasn't annoyed because my mom e-mailed her about it.. ehh what are you gonna do?

Not very often, not even business-related ones.  Although, I know some people who automatically have their signature filled in with a closing (regards, sincerly, etc).

Sometimes I wish my FMIL would be a little more formal.  She likes to make up words that are shortened versions of longer words.  It's like her own language.  It's funny at times, but also a little annoying at times.

My firm addresses all correspondence with "Dear so and so" and we end it with "yours truly." I thought it was strange at first too.

My work addresses written correspondence (mailed letters) formally like "dear so and so". I don't think I'm like that on email, it's more casual like "Hi so and so". My personal email I even skip that. FMIL will address me on email as "Becky" and sign it "Love, Jan" .

My mom ALWAYS writes Dear so and so. So much so that she usually uses it when posting on someones facebook wall. My dad does a lot of the time too, so I usually respond to them the same way.

If it's more formal, then yes I use Dear. Other than that, no.

The Dear is kind of old school. But thanks in advance I think is normal. You would know best - depends on your relationship with her.

I think it can be an age thing. My parents in their emails do write "Dear" whereas I don't.
