honeymoon registries?

I've been doing some research on honeymoon locations and have noticed that a lot of resorts offer honeymoon registries.  They can be used to help defer the cost of the lodging, or pay for extra activities or special meals.  I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with these and if anyone actually buys items off them?

We're still deciding on our honeymoon location, but we're seriously considering going back to Disney World and getting the full "Disney experience" by staying at one of their resorts, doing the dining plan, etc.  Their registry system seems pretty comprehensive, but it looks like they tack on fees for certain transactions, and the way I was reading it is that the money people spend on items for us actually goes to us to use however.

Re: honeymoon registries?

  • I have one word- no.  They're rude.  People will give you money for your wedding.  You can choose to use it for your honeymoon if you'd like.

  • I agree with PP and for the reasons you stated. Say your uncle purchases a certificate for a swimming with dolphins excursion, well it gets handed over to you as cash or whatever. Also, there are fees, so your uncle thinks he's spending $100 on you but really it's $85 because the company kept a percentage. I really don't like honeymoon registries.

  • I also feel that they are very tacky...

I agree they're tacky, but mostly they're inefficient.  It'd be easier to just give someone cash rather than pay for part of the honeymoon, since they'd actually receive the full value given with a cash gift.  With the honeymoon registry, the couple doesn't receive the whole gift.

Also the dining plan at Disney is a great idea.  We did it last time my family went, and it saved us so much money.

  • I've never heard good things about honeymoon registries for reasons all the PPs said. It'd be worth more of your time and effort to use money people give you as gifts toward your honeymoon.

  • I would have to disagree. yes maybe some sites do take a percentage but there are other options and sites to choose from that do not do that.  It is ultimatley YOUR wedding and you have the right to choose what you would like as a gift, if that is money towards something to do on your honeymoon than that is your and your fiance's decision not anyone else's.  I would just be sure to offer other options such as a traditional registry.  The rules of weddings are changing and what used to be rude or considered tacky is now acceptable.  Just like the acceptance of a couple living together before marriage.  Some people still think its tacky but many others have accepted it as a common practice.  All in all you have to do what you want to do because people are going to judge regardless whether its your honeymoon registry or the centerpieces you use for the reception. If a honeymoon registry is what want i think you should go for it just look into your other options.
