Your Wedding Theme!

Hey ladies!!

I'm having a hard time with our theme. We aren't having a hard time following, supplementing or sticking to our theme. It's more or less the people who scoff at our theme.

Our wedding is Fire Department/Firefighter Themed. My fiance has been a Volunteer Firefighter for 6 years. His dad was also a part of the Department my fiancee belongs to. His dad passed away from cancer in Sept 2010. I thought this theme would incorportate what my fiance LOVES (sometimes more than me -- ;) JK!) & a way to have a piece of his dad there too. His whole side is wearing their Class A uniforms for the ceremony (which, btw, saved each of them $220 on a tux). We have a lot of things that are being put at the wedding, and everything that incorporates the FD/FF theme. After a year of being with my fiancee, I joined the volunteer community and joined his FD and I love it and am just as much a part of it as he is....

My bridesmaid, yesterday, as I was sharing with her what her son (the ring bearer) would be carrying (a sentimental firetruck w/ rings inside a lid that lifts up)  told me it was such a bad idea & that he should be carrying a pillow...! I almost cried in the middle of the store we were in!

I just need a little bit of advice as to how to handle this criticism. I hate sounding like a broken record by saying "Whose wedding is this?" or "Sha_____ & Sha_____'s names are on the invites & wedding license".. I feel so terrible about having this theme when I thought it was such an amazing idea at the beginning....I just don't feel supported by anyone but my mom and fiancee about the theme! I just hate when people scoff at the things I've decied to do....

Re: Your Wedding Theme!

  • If you and FI love your theme and want to commit to it, commit to it! Don't be discouraged by what others will say - everyone will always have an opinion and often times, it won't be the same as yours. I think you'll just have to keep repeating the same lines "Thanks, we'll think about it" and move on in the conversation.

I've had vendors that told me my colour scheme just does not work yet I've found lots of pictures on the internet saying otherwise. But just because they say it won't work, doesnt mean it wont work. It's just one opinion and you have to decide whether it matters enough for you to change it or not.

  • I say screw them, I think your theme is sweet and sounds like it means a lot to your fiancee!! It's your day and should be special and memorable for the both of you!! Hang in there :)

  • For some reason weddings seem to yield a lot of unsolicited advice. You just have to act like you listen and then do what you want to do or tell them to butt out!

  • yea, people are so close minded sometimes.. I think all you can do is put a positive spin on it- "Well, (FI name) and I are very excited about it!" and move on..
A few people think it is a travesty we aren't doing a cake cutting and boquet/garter tosses and such. It doesn't fit US and we are very happy with the decision!

  • Some people just don't know when to keep their thoughts to themselves! side note...I'm sure any little boy would be happier to carry a firetruck than a pillow.

  • I like your theme, and love that it has personal meaning. I say stop talking wedding with people who are not supportive-- instead send an email saying "Ringbearer will be carrying this firetruck with our rings. I just thought he might like to see it ahead of time! Hope you're doing well!". And if she responds to the email with something negative, ignore and delete.

And if people don't let up, start telling them really ridiculous things...like you're going to have the ring bearer dress like an oompa loompa. A firetruck won't seem like such a big deal after that :)
