dumb question

Ok so when we got my e-ring it fit pretty well perfect. Didn't need to be resized or anything. Well lately I've noticed that it's really loose. I don't think that I am loosing weight, (FI says that the e-ring is gaining weight haha) I know what causes my fingers to swell, but what would cause my fingers to shrink and how long should I wait before I think about resizing it? :( I don't want it to fall off and not be able to find it.

You got engaged this summer, right?  Your fingers (and all your extremities, really) will be slightly larger or swollen in warm weather, and thinner/back to normal size when it's cool or cold.  Do you think this could be why?

I've never worn a ring before so I have no idea. so I should base the size off of my hands in colder weather?

What is the weather like in Pgh? Is it cold? Usually if it is cold out, my hands tend to contract and my ring also feels loose. So it could just be that. Is it really loose enough that it would fall off, over your knuckle? Even when mine is loose, it would never just fall off, you know?

Yeah, before I put on an extra 15 pounds my ring did the same thing in summer and winter. I used to have to becareful when taking off gloves during the winter cause it was so loose.I like a tight fit for a ring and almost considered re-sizing mine but then I worried that I would not be able to get it off at all during the summer cause it is very tight then. We just can't win :/

I find myself sitting around (like at my desk or on the couch) flinging my hand around to see if it will fall off, it slides down right to my knuckle I'm just worried that I won't notice one day and my knuckle won't stop it (sorry I know how paranoid and silly I sound but where else can I ask a group of ladies who wear rings this large?)

Oh yeah - the seasons make a HUGE difference in how my ring fits. Heehee - your ring is gaining weight. :P

My fingers swell up a lot when it's hot out.  So that could be a big part of it.  Does it feel like it's going to fall off?  Mine is kind of loose most of the time - but when it's hot it's pretty tight.  It's never so loose it will fall off though. If you feel like it will fall off - I'd get it resized, but only slightly.  You don't want it to cut off circulation when your fingers swell.

I agree with PP- if you feel like it's actually going to fall off your finger, even with a violent hand motion :), you should get it sized down a little bit.  You don't want to take any chances of losing it!

Ditto everyone else. Coincidentally I taught this phenomenon last week.

It sounds like it's pretty loose, from what you describe. Don't worry about sounding paranoid I worry about the same stuff. Like PP's have said you might want to get it resize a little just to give you peace of mind!

Mine are always a little loose when it is cold out.  But I don't want to get them resized because then they will be too tight when it is warm.  They aren't in danger of falling off of my finger though.

ok S I'll bite... Taught this phenomenon? Thanks all, I just really don't want to lose it, and by thinking of it all the time, I think I am beginning to lose it.

E - there was nothing to bite on. I have to teach the cardiovascular system, so I use finger swelling and ring sizing as an example of regulation.

Elisha - Did they measure your finger when you got the ring? If you are really worried, maybe take it to the jeweler, and make sure it is the right size for you! I agree with pp's, if you do get it sized, I would do so slightly, because if it is too tight, there is no going back!! (Right?)

I used to have one of these on a ring my parents bought me that was slightly too big...but another size would have been too small.http://www.amazon.com/Get-Organized-RING-HUGGIES-SMALL/dp/B000XGIW2Y/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=jewelry&qid=1258059535&sr=8-9

Oh and E - My rings are a size too big on purpose. My fingers swell really badly when my asthma is bothering me. What I do it I wrap embroider floss around the part of my rings that sit on the inside of my hand, so that I can take it off as needed. It's a non-permanent fix, but keeps my rings on when my fingers shrink.

S- I knew you taught, but I never knew what it was that you taught. :)There is never going back once it's tightened? That's scary. When we got the ring I just tried a couple on and this was the one that we picked out for me, and they said that it was the right size since it fit. I guess going back to see what thye think wouldn't be a bad idea.

(Right?)No - I'm pretty sure they can always make it bigger or smaller.  But I'm sure she wouldn't want to keep taking her ring back and having to leave it for a week or more every time.E - mine's loose enough now that it will rotate itself on my finger, and will slide to my knuckle.  But i know it won't go beyond that. (Though I do take it off when I work out because I'm paranoid about it.)  In the summer it fits much better.

I agree with everyone else. Just wanted to say don't feel silly for worrying about your ring. I always worry that my stones are going to fall out (the diamond in my e-ring has been in DH's family for 5 generations!), and am constantly looking at my rings. People probably think I'm nuts. :-P

FI says I have "sausage fingers" cause they are short and chubby (considering how tall I am) so when my fingers swell it gets quite tight. This is the first ring I've ever worn, I didn't expect it to be loose. I think maybe I'll see if it gets worse, and go from there. Not rush into anything.

I don't know if you have a warranty on your ring , but at work we can have it sized in a couple hours for you, and you can size it up or down a zillion times, it won't hurt it.  Also, you could have sizing beads put in it to make it fit tighter on your finger but still be able to come off in the summer. the beads are placed so that it presses on your knuckle to be able to take the ring off.

I didn't read all the previous responses so sorry if this was already mentioned.  But I think wearing a ring everyday can cause your finger to "shrink" a bit in that area.  I don't even wear a size 5 ring and I can see an indentation around where my ring goes.  From what I've heard it's sort of the same concept as those infomercial weight loss belts you see sometimes.  Anything being tight around an area is going to make your body adjust to it in certain ways...I'm trying to find a good article on this, but Google is giving me freaky suggestions (though not as bad as Jenn's lol)

Sorry for the misinformation - I just assumesd rings were like dresses when you alter them ;-)

I lost 15 pounds of post chemo weight, and it was still summer, so I knew I needed to size because my finger was just going to get smaller. One thing I did to make sure I wanted it sized was had a ring guard on it for about 1 month before I decided to size it. That way I knew it was definitely what I wanted done. A ring guard is a brass piece that is quite duarable, and on my ring, couldn’t be seen at all, unless you looked vverrry close. That way, if you don’t want it resized, just cut if off, and presto. to f/u on ranne's posting, I had my ring sized at jared, it took them one hour. Whereas jeweler that made my ring, while free, would have been 2-3 weeks! Patience is not my strong suit.

No, I know - you helped with my dilemma about the 10k limit, etc.  Your advice was very helpful at the time, and is still very relevant for everyone else.  If you go to ranne's store, there is a 20k limit :-D as opposed to the other stores of the same chain.  Besides, there's much better customer service - lol.
