Saturday before Memorial Day?

I keep getting weird looks when I say that we're planning on the Saturday before Memorial Day (May 25th).  Will it really be that big of an inconvenience to people?? Some people will take off  early that Friday anyway to have a 4 day weekend! I evven talked with someone who thinks we'll lose a big chunk of our guest list because they'll opt for their vacation over our wedding. Do you think that's true? Should we try and move the date up?

Ps. (My FI actually came up with the date because its the 30th anniversary of the release of Return of the Jedi!! We're both big sci-fi nerds, so I love this date! He actually proposed to me on Vday after seeing Phantom Menace! )

Ours is that same day. We're sending out STD's a little less than a year in advance so people know not to plan a vacation. We're also doing it on Saturday rather than Sunday (which was our original plan) that way people can travel home Sunday, but still have their Monday off. =) I think you'll be fine, just send STD's if you can!

Grr...now you have me nervous. I don't think anyone will skip out though, our guest list is only 100. Since its so small were very close with all of those people. I'd be mad if they skipped out to be honest.

I'm a May 25th bride too, the only hiccup I've really run into by having it that day is that my officiant is charging me a $30 holiday fee. Memorial Day isn't that significant for either one of our families, so it's not a big deal at all. It all depends on your crowd though.

ETA: If you haven't, I'd run your date by any key friends or family members to see what they say.

I would think as long as you send your STD's with enough notice you should be in the clear. It's your wedding you and your FI choose the date you want, IMO you shouldn't have to accomodate others unless you feel like you need to ie family but again that's my opinion

I am a Memorial Day weekend Bride (25th) and actually our family and friends are excited! An extra day to travel and relax plus if they wanna have a picnic they can on Monday! I think it depends on your family and guest what they do but it works best for us, and to be honest we will have almost everyone show on our guest list cause of it. We have been spreading word of mouth and will send STD in September/October

I don't think it should affect many people at all. Just a note though, I discovered I'm actually getting married on the OTHER Star Wars Day (May 4th- May the fourth be with you). Again, I don't think people will skip out, but if that's the reason, it's always another option.

We are getting married ON Memorial Day, the majority of our guests live in the area, so it will only be a hour at most drive.  We are having it early in the day, so people can go and do what they want for the evening :)

I am a May 25th bride too and really saw the benefits with the long weekend giving people time to travel and relax.  I've been receiving backlash too from people for scheduling the wedding then because of hiked up travel rates for the holiday (mostly all the guests are out of town).  We were hoping that would be a good weekend and we've already booked major vendors for that date so we're sticking with it!  Also, I'm so excited to hear about the Return of the Jedi release anniversary, my FI is a HUGE Star Wars fan and would be excited about this if he doesn't know already :-)

I wouldn't worry either about the day. Just send out STDs early. I am the 26th and chose this weekend purposely so OOT guests didn't have to worry about taking a day off work to travel. Granted most are within an hour drive and we are having it near the shore so that they are close enough to go to the beach that weekend.

I'm a May 26th bride as well and did it for the same reason although about half of our guests are on the other side of the country.  Regardless, everyone that I've talked to so far has not cared and thought it was a great idea.

I'm a May 25th bride too but we don't have the Memorial Day problem considering I live in Canada.

I would think that people would rather be at a wedding for someone they care about.
