New to Board! Have some ?'s

Hey everyone! We are getting married May 18, 2013 and have changed the venue about 4 times! We are really thinking of having the wedding at my FI gma's house. She has her house on the river and alot of land. I know I have to PURCHASE everything but I didn't know if anyone else was having a "at home" wedding? I am deployed right now so I hired a coordinator for about $800. I am hoping everything will work out!

Any thoughts/suggestions?!?!

Re: New to Board! Have some ?'s

  • Hi and congratulations.! ..I'm a May 11th bride. We decided on a hotel wedding package because so much is included. The food, hors d'oeuvres, 2 open bars, chairs, tables, tablecloths, chair covers and sashes, cake cutting, centerpieces, hotel rooms for guests, and for us the night of, holding room for the bridal party, and a chocolate fountain..tht was FI's only request.lol.. You would definitely have to factor in all those things with an at home wedding but it sounds beautiful on the river! Try DIY'ng a lot of things and it will save you a lot. I'm DIY'ng my invitations, table number cards, and some more. Whatever yu decide im sure it will be awesome.!

  • Welcome to the board & congrats!

I don't have much advice because my wedding is at a winery & everything is included. Try looking up party tent rental companies in your area, they usually also rent out linens & such.  You might also be able to find a caterer that brings everything.  My caterer includes all the dishes, linens, glasses, silverware, literally everything.  Good luck!

  • First off THANK YOU. I see you are deployed. Please be safe and hope y9ou are able to return home soon.

Secondly an at home wedding sounds wonderful. I am not doing mine that way but I just recently attended the wedding of a close friend and it was in her own backyard. She was fortunate enough that all tables and chairs she was able to "borrow" from a family members church. She did long tables in a u shape instead of lots of rounds. Family helped out with meals and her aunt made the cake. Lots of DIY decoratoins and let me tell you it was beautiful. Wishing you loads of luck

I would ask your planner, many planners have ideas and secert deals on finding things you will need. Think of everything you would like to have on your wedding day and try to invision. There is also lots of wonderful ideas for outdoor, backyard weddins on pintrest and just by googling. So many ideas and budget friendly Good luck!!

  • Congrats and welcome :-)

Craigslist will more than likely become your new best friend, I'd definitely look on there for a variety of things. Also, some things may end up being cheaper to buy than rent- like tablecloths and table runners. Sites like linentablecloth.com and smartyhadaparty.com would also be good places for you to look and they frequently have sales too :-)

  • Congrats and welcome!

I am not much help here since we are having ceremony and reception all at one venue that provides everything for us. But like someone said, try rental places and definitely lean on your planner for all the help. I have heard that they usually have in's to get things at a better deal.

Also, thank you very much for your service. My brother is currently stationed in Germany and heading to Afghanistan in May or June so I thank you and your family immensely for all you do. :)

  • Hi and welcome to the board!

I'm not much help because we are having our wedding at a villa/farm and they include everything: catering, cake, glassware, flatware, silverware, linens, etc. But before we chose this venue, we were looking to have our wedding outside at an arboretum. We were going to rent a tent from Prestige rental company and you can also rent chairs, linens, etc, from them. You should then look for a caterer that specializes in outdoor weddings, they will be able to deliver the food and keep it warm at the venue. They usually provide a wait staff too. Let us know how everything goes! You should take a look at the the Outdoor Weddings forum, I got a lot of good tips from there.

I'd also like to chime in with a THANK YOU!  And congrats!

My aunt got married at her home.  She didn't purchase anything- she rented everything.  I'm not sure which is more affordable, so you may want to check that out.  Also, check to see what your caterer provides- they will usually provide all dishes/flatware/glasses and sometimes even tables and linens.  Otherwise, you can rent tables and chairs, dance floors, tents, etc.

  • Welcome & thank you for your service!

My parents wedding was at there home I believe they rented everything as well. Were doing ours at a hotel to make it easier. I've found this site to be extremely helpful as well as wedding wire and wedding channel.

    Good luck!
