Slightly Venting....

A couple nights ago, FI and I were getting the last of our guests' addresses from his mom. His grandma had said she wanted us to invite a few extended relatives from her side of the family, we said ok. The next day, it occurred to me that his cousin (the one who so kindly set his date the same as ours) may be inviting these same relatives too. That would make us look horrible especially since they sent their STDs back in April (yup, 13 months in advance).

So FI called his mom last night to ask if she knew his cousin invited these relatives too, she said yes. They're having a bigger, more lavish wedding than we are- so I wasn't surprised. Unfortunately, his grandma's started to really lose it cognitively, so we'll have to explain to her again what's going on and why we can't invite these people. We'd be putting ourselves and these relatives in a really bad spot.

Re: Slightly Venting....

  • Would these relatives be offended if they are not invited to yours? Are you guys close with them? And remind me- you and FI got engaged before his cousin, right? I'm annoyed for you. I feel like I wouldn't want to leave important people off of my list just b/c of someone else (FI's cousin) being rude.

  • No they're not important to us, but to his grandma they are. We weren't originally going to invite them, but since FI has little family and his grandma wanted us to invite them it wasn't a big deal to include them since it's only 3 people.

FI and I have been engaged for a little over 2 years and his cousin's only been engaged since last christmas.

  • That has got to be so frustrating! I don't know what their reasoning is, but I find it very rude of them to pick the same date as you two.
  • I can't imagine how you are dealing with this. Kudos to you for not loosing on your FI's cousin.

It's actually a weird blessing that he's done this. FI's never had a good relationship with him or his brother, so this is actually not THAT shocking. FI's aunt is by far the most narcissistic, know-it-all type person I've ever met and his other cousin is the king of all douchebags. Fi didn't want to have to invite these people to our wedding anyway, and they've granted that wish for FI, lol.
