We were all set to make a lot of payments this month.
Fi found out that they mis-classified his hazard/combat pay in 2010 so even though he owed at tax time (And paid $900), he was actually supposed to have gotten over $1k back. That means an ammended return of over $2k.
Also, he's about to start getting his Wounded Warrior Disability SSA payment, which would be a lump sum of 5 months back dated, plus a monthly payment. That was going to mostly go for wedding stuff (we are talking a few grand in one check, plus around 1k a month).
We were SO stoked.
Then reality hit.
When the tax return check never showed, he went back to HR Block where they found out that his mother had submitted a tax return and payment in 2010, but had never finalized it, so not only did he not pay $900 that year (she was keeping track of his records while he was deployed), but he didn't even FILE taxes for that year (can you say penalties? Ugh). We can't exactly be frustrated with his mom for several reasons.. 1.) She's like the sweetest lady ever born on this planet. No joke. An absolute doll. You can't be mad at her! 2.) She tried! and now that she found out she "messed it up", she's heartbroken.

and 3.) The time she was due to file would have been just a week before she had a heart attack, followed by her son getting hurt in combat, followed by her having a stroke. Yikes. A lot on her plate a year ago.
AND
His old boss (a real jackwagon) is being an
@ss and was refusing to sign a piece of paper needed for the SSA payments. The SSA office got on his butt, as did the wounded warrior foundation and he still refused. Finally, a higher up in his chain of command reemed him out and ta da! Paper is signed. So now we re-start the 4-6 week clock on that one. UGH.
So, time to re-evaluate this months budget. LOL
