"Valet" Question

So.. My ceremony and reception will be held at the same place. It is sort of a campgroundswith cabins by a lake. The ceremony will be held by the lake. The reception will be held in the lakeside lodge which is next door. Parking will be on the other side of the lodge next to a pavillion. Now, I don't know the exact distance of the parking area to the ceremony area, but it is a bit far. The venue does not offer a valet service. So, I decided to ask all of my bridesmaids husbands, except for one who will be a groomsman, to act as valet. So I eel now have 4 valet. Now here is where I need your help, this seems so simple but yet I can't figure it out... I don't want them to have to walk from the parking area back over to the pick up area by the ceremony.. that will be a lot of walking.. So, any ideas? Also, at the end of the reception I'd like people to get their own cars since they will be right next door. I also don't want anyone intoxicated to be retrieving the cars, and I also don't want to tell anyone that they can't drink. So how should I get the keys back to the cars owner? I was thinking to make them wait until the car was parked and the valet returned and gave them their keys back before they sat down. Or should I have them give them a number and make a pegboard that we can hang keys on with the number, and they can get them back at the reception. It any other ideas? Thanks a ton!

Re: "Valet" Question

  • Can you not rent a few golf carts then guest could park there own cars and if they don't want to walk they could hop on the golf carts and ride?

  • If still have to get the golf carts back over to the parking area, and the road is very narrow, I don't feel comfortable having both car and a cart on the road.. There are a few hills that they'd have to ride over as well if they went into the grass.. But we do have a quad and thought we could use that, but only 1 quad and someone would have to ride it back over to the parking area..

  • Why cant guests park there own cars and walk. I did it at a wedding I went to last year and had no problem.
  • I just thought it'd be nice for them to not have to walk.. Its a little under a quarter mile of a walk... My main concern was originally for the elderly guests

</div><div>I get the concern- I specifically didn't choose venues where my guests would have to climb a lot of stairs or walk a long distance because we have several elderly guests.  I'm not sure how to fix your problem.  I guess I'm just not wild about the concept of asking your bridesmaid's husbands.  I mean, nobody is going to tell you no, but they are also your guests, so they shouldn't have to work, unless they specifically offered.  I'd look into hiring a valet.

  • Actually my maid of honor's husband was the one that suggested it, I then asked the other guys and they said they'd be fine with it.. Was trying to avoid hiring valet due to budget.. But will consider it if it comes down to it

Oh that makes sense. As someone suggested golf cart idea sounds good.

My only concern for people walking would be the elderly. Can't they be dropped off closer to the ceremony by family and then picked up when the night is over?

Like melb, I made it a point to not choose a venue that had a lot of stairs and that bathrooms would be easily accesible for the older guests. There is a handicap bathroom on the ground floor where all the ballrooms are, when I asked my venue for access for it for the elderly they had no problem.

  • I do have access to the handicap bathroom. My original concern was just for the elderly but then I just thought it'd be nice to offer it to everyone. Some of the elderly guests will just be arriving by themselves,I only invited immediate family, only aunts and uncles, no cousins, so their children will not be with them. I guess my question was misunderstood.. I do tentatively plan on doing valet for everyone, my mind may change by the the time the wedding comes around, but for now I do plan on doing it. My question was how to execute it, i.e. how to make it easier on the "ushers" by use of a cart or quad, and by easier, should I just designate one usher to ride the quad/cart over to pick up the other usher one he drops off the car? Or is there a better way? And what way should we return the keys to the guests?

I think I may be a little confused here... So you said in a PP that the road is narrow and you don't feel comfortable having both on the road... So would you ushers just follow each other back and forth? To me it would just seem easier to let the guest park their own cars have the cart/ quad waiting by the parking area and just transport the guest that way. I would think people wouldn't drive crazy at a wedding venue... Worse case just make a sign or two showing that there is cart/quad driving... Depending on your guest list this could work or be a complete disaster... For one I wouldn't want the responsibility of making sure the right keys go back to the right person heaven forbid if someone keys get lost or go to the wrong person. Other than that I am out of ideas sorry...

  • Yes I was thinking one could follow the other, and then in that case they would both be aware of each other on the road rather than someone not knowing about the quad and there be a terrible accident... I guess I'll have to think it through some more and figure out what we want to do. But thank you gals so much for your time and input.
