Not sure what to do on invitations

Originally, our plan was to have my FSIL make our invitations for us.  She's really crafty and good at that kind of stuff.  But, when it came down to it, we looked at papers and stuff, and I decided it would be easier and cheaper to order something online.  So, I got a bunch of samples that I liked from Wedding Paper Divas, and found 2 or 3 I really like, but when I showed them to my FI, he suddenly decided he wants fancier invitations.  My thought is that it's just something people are going to put on their fridge till the wedding then throw out, they don't need to be super fancy.  But, he saw my mom's framed invitation from her wedding and thinks we need something like that.
This is the one area where I really don't care what we get...I just don't want to pay more than $2 an invitation.  And, the fancier you get, the more postage you pay, and with 350 guests, it's going to add up.
Do people still think that the invitation is supposed to reflect the theme of the wedding and all that?  Are people really that critical of them?  I'm having a hard time justifying putting the work into adding flare if no one is going to notice.
What are you doing for your invites?

  • I think as long as you like them and they reflect the formality of the event, that's all that matters.

  • This is an area where we are trying to save. We are likely going with an invite we loved off of weddingpaperdivas.com. We really liked the sample and my parents do too. FI and I agreed that while we want nice invites, we don't want to go crazy and spend a ton. The paper stuff we are keeping as low as possible, while still going nice.

  • Personally, I'm a wedding invite judger. Always have been, always will be. If this is something your FI cares about, then try to appease him. You can get lovely and inexpensive invites from vistaprint. I wish I had known that before having mine designed.

  • This is exactly why I can't justify spending tons of money on Invites/STDs, most people don't save them and after the wedding happens- they're in the trash. I could personally see our parents and maybe grandparents saving ours, but that's it. In the very least they should coordinate with the formality of your wedding.

I'm extremely happy with my Vistaprint invites, and thanks to Groupons I only spent $70 including shipping and the cost of the Groupon on mine.
