Orange is my favorite color. That being said we are only having splashes of in the wedding. Have you thought of maybe a burnt orange for things instead of traffic cone orange? That would go well with more earthy tones, and not be as loud. Maybe see if he would be willing to do an orange bout instead of the whole tie. We are doing red with yellow for the wedding and have orange in the flowers.
I agree that there are nice shades of orange. I watch an awful lot of HGTV and they use orange with earth tones all the time and it looks extremely modern and beautiful. In fact, I would say that if you are planning on earth tones, one brighter color as an accent would be perfect.

It all depends on how you'd use it. For Example with the whole tie thing, you could find a tie that incorporates the natura tones and splashes of orange. I wouldn't competely write it off.
I just did a google search, one for 'rustic theme weddings' and one for 'orange & blue weddings' Actually came up with quite a few beautiful things :-)
Thanks for your opinions I've definitely been looking and I will keep doing so; I'm sure I can find a suitable tie that I could give him as his gift on the day-of as a surprise.

An earlthy burnt orange would like great if incorporated the right way into the flowers or center pieces.
