Cake topper question

My fiance is very interested in the old school bride and groom with the hair color that matches the actual couple cake toppers.  (i.e. like the ones his parents had when they got married over 40 years ago).  I highly dislike those and don't think they fit our style or wedding at all.  That being said, I don't want to totally nix his opinion and I'm trying to figure out a way that we can incorporate his idea without looking so old fashion.

Any ideas?  I've seen the clay model ones on Esty but they are too expensive (usually around $150+) so those aren't an option.

  • Are you crafty? I've seen people make their own clay topper

Uck- toppers... I'm no help... I just agree that toppers are old fashioned.

  • How important is it to him? How important is it to you?

We're not going to have a cake topper. FI doesn't really care all that much and I'm not a fan. However, in general, I'm picking my battles with him. For the most part, he's letting me have freedom with decisions, so when he does have a strong opinion on something, I try to give in. If he has his heart set on it (maybe BECAUSE his parents had one), it might make sense to just give in.

As an alternative, are you planning on having (or have you considered having) a groom's cake? I'm planning on surprising FI with a "Red Sox" themed groom's cake to have a little piece of his obsession at our wedding (even though it doesn't fit with the vibe I want the rest of the wedding to have at all). Just a thought..

  • I agree with Jen--if you are planning on having a groom's cake, you could get the cake topper for his cake. From what I've seen of them, the groom's cake doesn't normally match the wedding at all and instead matches the groom's personality/favorite hobby/the like, so you could use the topper on it, even if it were to clash.

  • That'd be something to do on a groom's cake if you're doing one :-)

I too am not a fan of cake toppers, but if there's a bridal consignment store by you- I'd check that out.

  • My FI also liked those type of toppers but wasn't supper insistent on it. We are having just an initial topper on ours, and I'm having my sister make munnys that look like us to put on the cake table. In other words we are technically having a little bride and groom but it wont sit on the cake it will just be on the table. You could look into doing that so its not technically on your cake if it doesnt match.

  • I agree with putting it on the grooms cake if you're having one, just so he can have something he wants.  We didn't like the traditional cake toppers, so we found two purple clay kissing birds on etsy that say "mr" and "mrs" on their sides.  Great decoration for our future home too.

  • I'm doing one from DB that has the bride standing on a suitcase reaching up to kiss her groom. I'm over a foot shorter than my FI, so I thought this was cute and fit us!

  • weare only doing one cake, so the grooms cake idea didn't occur to me, but i agree with that one.
or just do the cake topper you want and buy on elike he wants, and have it on the table near it, maybe next to a photo frame with an old wedding pic from parents/grandparents, etc.
