How do I block hotel rooms for guests?

I've heard of couples doing this for guests when they get married at a hotel or inn, even negotiating a special reduced room rate for guests, but how do you do it? I'm getting married at a country club that doesn't offer any accommodations, could I arrange a wedding block at a local hotel even if I'm not hosting my wedding there?

Yep! The last wedding I went to I was an oot guest and they had a block on rooms, but they didn't give a discount which was lame

Yes, call group sales of the hotel.

Most hotels have a special room block rate.  You have to call to figure it out.  They may not let you do the room block this far in advance though.  We've already done a room block for the wedding, but they are the only hotel anywhere near our venue, so they do room blocks super far in advance and we took it.  They're giving us an amazing rate!

Yeah, you'd talk to a group salesperson and they'd fill you in on rates and such. You typically don't have to be hosting an event there to reserve a block.
