Save the date question

I've never been a fan of save the dates, but with my fiance's family and friends being from out of town, I feel that we need to send them out.

How far in advance should they be sent out?
Do you send them to all wedding guests or just those that are out of town?
what is the best way to send them out?  Magnets or just plain cards with a picture and info?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sendount out STDs beginning of August.  They are going out to all of my guests...in town and out of town.  We constantly have pur potential guests asking 'when is the wedding?'  Since our Day is on a Friday...everyone on our guest list gets one....so they can coordinate their schedules accordingly.
I'm sending mine out 9 months before.
Google 'save the date' or visit www.invitationconsultant.com to get ideas.

6-9 months before the wedding generally

We're sending ours to everyone, all of our guests are at least an hour from the venue but I think you could really go either way

I prefer magnets only because the guest receives it & throws it on the fridge. Hard to lose it or forget when it's right there. I would probably lose a postcard.

I'm sending mine out in November..to all of my guests. Just to remind everyone of the date. Cuz jus like PP said..ppl will constantly be asking you what's the date..even though you've already told them a million times. Our STDs are magnets..so everyone can stick them on the refrigerator.

We are sending ours out September-October time frame.

Everyone should get it so that they can reserve that day.

I wanted to do magnets but the cost of it with having almost 300 people on the guest list was just too high.

Typically you send them about 6-9 months out. Everyone gets them, maybe send them to any international guests a bit earlier to account for extra mailing time. You could go either way with a card or magnet :-)

6-9 months, or if you have a lot of OOT guests you can send them 10 months out

Do you send them to all wedding guests or just those that are out of town?
Most of our guests are OOT but we were planning to send STDs to all of our guests anyway

I personally think magnets are tacky... I'm not sure why. I prefer paper STDs, similar to an invite.

Sending mine around October to all my guests. We're doing boarding passes (they are so cute, found them on Etsy) since it's a DW.

I agree with all the PP.  I'd like to add that I'm not the biggest STD fan either, but everyone who's coming to wedding lives at least an hour from the venue- most live several hours or flying distance away.  I'm not doing magnets because I also think they're cheesy.  I just put a deposit down on a beautiful, non-photo, STD that matches my style and colors perfectly.
