How soon is too soon to find a baker for the wedding cake? Has anyone ordered theirs yet?

I have already ordered mine. : I'm having a destination wedding 6 hours away and took two trips to meet with vendors. The next time I go will be the week of my wedding!

I found my baker and put a deposit down.  We have decided on the flavor but not the final design yet.

My mom is visiting in October I think, so I might do it when she is here.  She lives 6 hours away from me, so hasn't been involved at all except for one trip dress shopping when I went hom eto go with her.  Checking out cakes is something I think she'll like, and neither me or FI have strong opinions on.

We've ordered ours.  We put down the deposit, okay'd the design, and I've already bought the topper.  We knew what we wanted and apparently around here cake people book fast.  

The nice thing is that we ordered the table cake to feed 130 people (it's 4 tiers), but we will let her know a month before the wedding if we need kitchen cake/how much we'll need.  Kitchen cake is cheaper than adding another tier and no one will be able to tell the difference since she'll make it the same flavor and color as our cake.

My cake has been decided on and I attempted to finalize everything yesterday, but they were closed. So Im just about done with that.

We were just talking about this yesterday. We were thinking about going to sample cake maybe in October sometime and hopefully we will have that check done sometime next month.

We went to sample the cake last month, my MOH/sister was leaving for school and wanted to do the cake tasting before she left lol. FI doesn't like cake so he doesnt care. The cake comes included also in our package but when we were discussing our vision/ design we wanted vs whats included it came out to like 300+ more than what we already had paid through the venue so we are thinking that the lady that helped us didnt know what she was talking about because she kept running to the back to ask someone. So i'm going to go again and talk to someone who doesnt have to be consulting with others. We'll see...

I'm having a dessert table with a tiramisu as our "wedding cake". We met with her back in July to sample everything. We haven't put a deposit down yet, but I think we will by the 6 month mark.

Our cake baker is contracted by our venue, so we've met with her and done some basic tasting. We haven't started discussing design or flavors yet, which we will likely do after the first of the year.

FI and I, however, have decided we want our cake to have multiple flavors, each a different tier. I want a red velvet layer, he wants a carrot cake layer, and since both of those work especially well with cream cheese frosting, our other layers will be based on that. I've suggested an orange vanilla layer (think creamcicle) and a caramel cake for the others.

Fi has made it clear he wants to work this with me so we're going to start with it in Dec I would hope 5 months is enough time too lol

FI wants cheesecake. There is a place here that just does cheesecakes and according to their site they make 222 flavors. (yes that many). I am not sold on doing all cheesecake though. The caterer we are probably going with contracts through a different baker here who happens to provide a small selection of cheesecakes. Maybe we'll do 1 for the head table and then a cake for guests. Not sure yet.

We're going to do some tasting in October and hopefully have it all picked out November sometime. We just want a simple 2 tiered "display" cake and then sheet cake for everyone else.

The only thing I have regarding the cake is the topper.  I ordered it from Etsy.  Love it!
