short hair faux updo

hi, i have chin length hair that i love, but sometimes i want to pin it up.  it's too short for a ponytail and i don't like the big butterfly clips.  i've seen pictures of 'faux updos' for short hair but can't seem to find a tutorial.  any links/advice would be great!

Re: short hair faux updo

  • Hi Christina,
I've got shorter hair too that I love to put up. Before you decide how to put it up a few tips I have are
    1) don't try to put up clean hair. You've probably heard that unwashed hair is a bit more manageable and that is totally true ESPECIALLY with short hair.
    2) I like to use a combination of products to really help get that hold we lack in having shorter hair to gather. For sleeker 40's style looks pomade is the best thing to use. It looks glossy and your hair pretty much surrenders to you and however you want to shape it. If you're going for a more natural and relaxed looking up-do I suggest using a mousse (I use a volumizing one but if you've already got volume any kind would probably work) and working that through your hair. Then blow dry it out on warm. If you are looking to add more volume blow dry your hair with your head hanging down, it works wonders! Once the mousse is in and you begin shaping your hair, the best product tip I have for you is freeze spray! I use Got 2 B freeze spray in the yellow aerisol can and it works incredibly well. I've cut the number of bobby pins I need to use in half with this stuff.

    I hope these tips help!
Have you found sites with cute up-dos because although this site is helpful for a lot of things, short wedding hair styles is not one of them...

  • If you are ok with a slightly messy hairstyle, I used to twist my hair up in little sections and pin.  From the front you have the appearance of a half up, half down do and from the back it's messy and spunky.  Kiera Knightly did her hair like that to teh Oscars once, or an awards show, and I stole the idea.  I also used to just pull my hair back from about ear level and could often twist it into a half french twist.  Depends on how long your hair is, but that can be done with pins or a smaller clip. That was always my go-to when I had a bob a year or so ago.  I google short haired celebrities and add like "awards" and steal hair ideas that way!
