Another Thank You Card question

For a hand written Thank You note, one is supposed to make reference to the gift, right? Does the same hold true for monetary gifts? Are we supposed to make reference to the specific amount that was given to us? Or just say "Thank you for your gift, it'll help us to purchase a home..." (maybe not those exact words, but to that point).

My mother's secretary made reference to the specific amount in her Thank You cards, and said that a lot of people contacted her saying that they gave more than what she said in the Thank You card. Apparently, her someone had been going through her cards. There's a reason to reference the specific amount I guess, though I don't think we'll have that problem.

We have received a few checks so far. When I wrote the note, I just mentioned thank you for the generous gift. We will put the money to good use. I don't think you really need to put the exact amount in the note, but that is also up to you and what you feel comfortable writing.

I've never put the exact amount in cards - it just gives me an icky feeling. I've always said, "Thank you so much for the check.  We can't wait to use it to....blah blah blah."

Agree with PPs - no need to mention the amount, but definitely include what you plan to use it for...

I wouldn't mention the amount I have been saying " Thank you so much for the gift of money, we really appreciate it......"

Thank you. I won't be putting the amount then. I would not feel comfortable writing that, but I wanted to be sure before sending the cards out.

I didn't put the amounts. I just said thank you for the gift card or check or cash. I honestly never thought of including the amount it was just like second nature for me not to write it.

I agree with PPs. Don't put the amount - just put "thank you for your generious gift, etc."

I wouldn't put a specific amount, just thank you for the generous gift... so far I have put what we plan to use the money with because we want to still buy furniture and things for our new house, but I think if you say about it going to good use that should be fine too.
