For a hand written Thank You note, one is supposed to make reference to the gift, right? Does the same hold true for monetary gifts? Are we supposed to make reference to the specific amount that was given to us? Or just say "Thank you for your gift, it'll help us to purchase a home..." (maybe not those exact words, but to that point).
My mother's secretary made reference to the specific amount in her Thank You cards, and said that a lot of people contacted her saying that they gave more than what she said in the Thank You card. Apparently, her someone had been going through her cards. There's a reason to reference the specific amount I guess, though I don't think we'll have that problem.
