Are Diamonds THAT important?

My FI did an amazing job saving up to get me a beautiful diamond ring, and I honestly can't say I wouldn't want it because I am very attached to it. But do I think it really matters that it's a diamond? No. Although I do agree with some PP that I wouldn't have really wanted a CZ ring.  I'd have been happy with any other stones, but CZ is made to look like a diamond. If I were going to have another stone, I'd rather it be exactly what it looks like, if that makes any sense.
