Graduation

Is anyone else fighting graduations? As in people have some the day of your wedding. I have had a few guests tell me they have a graduation the day of the wedding and aren't sure if they can make it. All the graduations are out of town so I would think by now you would know your plans. And by out of town I mean same state different city.

Re: Graduation

  • Yes! Our one GM (FI's cousin) wife can't come because her sister is graduating college out of state. FI's cousin is still going to be with us, but they are splitting up their kids and he'll have their 2 daughters with him. I kind of got worked up the other day about it because I kept thinking "Who is going to watch these kids all night while the BP is doing things??" but FI calmed me down saying they'll have other aunts and uncles and their G-ma there to help watch them. It does stink that his wife couldn't come though but I totally understand.

  • I'm not, but it's funny because at the begining of the school year you KNOW the graduation day, time, and location. So, IMO, they should have known what their plans were so they wouldn't be wishy-washy on coming or not.
  • Yes! We actually thought we might lose one of our GM because his sister is graduating college that day. Luckily she goes to a really big school and he wasn't that keen on sitting thru her graduation so we gave him an out!

  • Not only do I have graduations effecting my guest list but I'm fighting the University of Iowa's graduation in the same town and the same weekend.  Everything from the hotel to the restaurant for the RD were booked early and what was left was pricey.  But it was the weekend that worked best for our family and our venue and it's all going to work out perfectly! :)

THis isnt neceissarily true...for high-school yeah its planned in September, but for collage, they dont always tell you until you apply for grad and you have to have a certain percentage of your courseload completed before you can apply....or you go to a stupid school like mine....I graduate in June, can't apply for grad until may 1st, and then they wont tell me which day until after may 15th... but they need to know how many guests I am bringing before may 15th. How the heck am I supposed to know who can come when I wont know the date and time until 2-3 weeks before grad? THats my vent, it sucks, but I do understand how people might not have known. However for collage/university grad, I dont understand why people would skip a wedding to attend someone elses, they are not really massive events/milestones for anyone except the graduates themselves.

  • When planning we actually had to move our wedding back a weekend because FI's brother was graduating high school on the day we first picked.

  • I think we have about 6 guests total that had to decline due to graduations.

  • Yeah, even though I thought about this before hand.  I really didn't think there was going to be a problem, I assumed everyone would graduate before/after 2012.  There's 4 couples missing because of graduations - one family is missing our ceremony but driving straight to the wedding after graduation.  This family and another family's kids should have graduated last year, but apparently had to do an extra year (we got engaged Oct 2010 so it was enough time in advance).

One of my mom's good friends is missing our wedding for their daughter's boyfriend's graduation party (eye roll)
