Registering question

Okay may ladies... I'm registering online right now to get a jump start for next weekend when FI and I go together. I'll confirm everything next weekend in the store but so we don't spend 6 hours registering next weekend, I thought this was a smart idea lol. Well can I get some suggestions from you ladies... Where you registered? What items are neccessities for a new home? Any recommendations on brands or colors? TIA Any help is appreciated!

Re: Registering question

  • There is a sticky post on R&G that has a pretty good check list, I started there. We are registered at Macy's, Williams-Sonoma, and Target.

  • When we first went to registrer they insisted on making sure we reigistered for everything anyone could possibly want in the store (a bit of a pushy lady), so we picked stuff in the store and edited the list later, I would probably recommend doing it this way instead of looking online first just because the visual layout of a store (bathroom items placed together etc) is easier to figure out what you are missing and what you need or dont need. Take a walk around and then add or take things off....and when you go to register tell the person you are dealing with exactally how long you want to spend (if you want to be there for 3 minutes they will move a lot faster then if you say, however long it takes)

  • We registered at Macy's and Target (with the majority of our items on the Macy's registry).  We went in to the store once, and then I have adjusted everything on-line since then.  All the places have their own little checklists of what they think you should need, and we just used that as a guide and crossed off the things we didn't need or want.

We registered at Macy's and Crate & Barrel. I didn't bother trying to figure it out online and waited until we got to the stores. I would walk through your house,
room by room, and see what you need and want. Though we have a house, I wanted to upgrade on items like towels, pots and pans, new silverware, Keurig, KitchenAid stand mixer, add some plates to what we have (so next time we entertain, we have enough to go around!). Aside from those "needs" I also added some decorative items too, like picture frames (I found some at Macy's that are silver and hold picture and invitation), decorative pillows, candle holders, etc. I had even added toasting flutes and the cake cutter, too (I wanted keepsake items). When you go to register, they will give you a list that you can go through, which is helpful to have. Register for a range of items, and don't be afraid to ask for higher priced items. You'd be surprised what people will buy. Plus, if you don't recieve them, then you could use giftcards towards the items, too.

    Have fun and good luck!

P.S. I've edited my registries a number of times, so you can always do that later on, too
  • We registered at Kohl's, BBB, and Pampered Chef. I wanted our guests to have the option of two different stores and then I love Pampered Chef. I started out by registering online as well for everything that I wanted. Then I compared the prices between Kohl's and BBB to see who had the item for cheaper. I recommend reading product reviews when deciding on a item. They can be really helpful.

The item I can't wait to get from the registery is an Artisan Kitchen Aid mixer with the ice cream maker attachment. I love to bake and use my mom's mixer all the time. I also love ice cream, so I thought this was another way to use my mixer instead of buying a seperate ice cream maker.
  • We're registered at Macy's and Bed Bath & Beyond and have had good experiences with both. Both stores gave us a checklist of items, but we also just took our time in the store to figure out what we wanted/needed.

As for brands-I'm a big fan of Noritake for china dishes and Calpholon for pots and pans.

    Have fun!

  • We did the same thing too - online first, then in store, then finalized things online.

Not sure where you are registered, but we spend a LOT of money this year on new home necessities - lawnmower, leaf blower, weed wacker, edger, snowblower, etc.  I am not sure where you are registering, but if you are buying a new home you might want to consider Home Depot or something.  Since we've already bought all those things, we registered at Macy's, Bed/Bath/Beyond, and Crate&Barrel.

These are our registries if you want to take a peek.  We are updating a lot of things =]

  • We registered at Macy's, C&B, and Williams Sonoma. I found it really helpful to actually go in the stores and check things out in person. I found that some things I liked online I didn't like in person and vice versa. We didn't want to spend hours in the stores either so after going in person, the bulk of our registry was added online when we were back at home.

When you register, you'll most likely be provided with a list of essentials to consider for your new home. I had quite a bit already so FI took it as an opportunity to upgrade some of our things such as good knives and china.

  • We registered at BBB..  We were going to register at Macy's but never got around to it.  But since we've both lived on our own before moving in together, we were mostly upgrading things anyway... don't really need a lot.

My brother and SIL just got married in Dec, and they registered in Target.  They (and their guests) had a ton of headaches with the registry.

I'd heard not so great things in the past about Target registries (bummer, cause it's one of my favorite stores ever!) but this was the first time I'd SEEN the issues.  I felt bad for them!

  • We registered at Target, BB&B, and C&B. I think the colors are completely up to you. Everyone has different tastes, so I think whatever colors you & FI would like to have in your home, go for it :) Personally, we like deep reds, purples, browns, tans, burnt orange, etc. But, like I said, you guys do what you like best!

As far as brands go, I would definitely say you get what you pay for & the price reflects the quality. Obviously a $500 knife set is going to be better than a $100 knife set. We went on the higher end of things when registering because we want our gifts to last us a long time!
