Marriage Certificate/ Name Change Question

Is your maiden name or married name on your marriage certificate?

My SS papers say something along the lines of needing to provide proof of your new name- I was thinking that my married name would be printed on the certificate, but it's not.

Just curious what everyone else has on theirs :)

Re: Marriage Certificate/ Name Change Question

  • Mine is not either. It says my maiden name as my "last name" and "current name" which I thought was strange, but the SS office didn't ask anything about it, so I'm thinking thats how its done since technically, when we went and applied for the cert. it was still my last name.

    This IS your marriage certificate. M/c = name change. Thats all they need! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" />
  • I'm pretty certain my new name is on my MC, since that's what I put down when applying. I haven't picked up the official/certified copies yet. I should probably do that so when I get back from our HM I can start the name change. Yay.
  • In CT, we apply for the Marriage License, and then after the wedding the JP or clergy or whatever signs it, and sends it back to the city hall where you got it.  The clerk at the city/town hall certifies it, and *poof* it's your marriage certificate.

This certificate, even though it has your old name, is proof of your name change.  This isn't proof of what your new name is, it's proof that you have a reason to change your name.

For most things you need to change, your marriage certificate and  the new  ID or Social Security Card are all you need.

Sometimes, just the certificate.  Sometimes just the Social Security Card.. etc.  But if you have all three of those, I think you can change just about everything.

For us we have to do SS first, then DMV- with a couple of days in between for the SS records to update in their system, or something- but I didn't have to wait for my new SS card to get my license.

  • Thanks, ladies!

The probate office where we filed our license wasn't exactly top notch, so I just wanted to double check that they hadn't screwed up (again) :)

Duh. That's what mine says too. I can't remember! Lol.
  • It's your maiden name because that was your legal name as of your wedding date and when you applied for your marriage license.  However, a marriage certificate is considered a legal name change document and they'll see H's last name on there.  Don't worry about it.

  • The marriage certificate should be proof to support your paperwork FOR your updated name with the Social Security Administration. You don't automatically get a new name when you marry. It only becomes a legal name when you file the paperwork with the SSA. Just did it myself today!

This is how I understand it, too. You are still your maiden name on your marriage certificate and anything else official until you change it with social security. Otherwise people who choose to keep their name would have to go change it back after the marriage license.
