Need more cake help (PIP & Poll)

So if you read my post last night, the cake is one of the many things I made the mistake of letting my parents help me choose. Right now, it's a very traditional cake completely covered in fondant (yuck). I'm changing the main icing to buttercream, but I'm still debating design.

I've narrowed it down to 3 - could y'all give some input? The fondant cake I have right now is 100% paid, so I'm thinking price shouldn't be an issue. I like all of the designs about the same.

What I want overall:
Colors: white and champagne
Look: Simple but bold, mix of traditional and modern
NO (added) topper - so the design needs to create enough interest by itself.
The cake as of now is 4 tiers (pending the final guest count)

#1: - ETA: Would you leave the ribbon the color of the cake? Or make it match the flowers like #3?

#2

#3 - But with normal sized tiers; I'm not sure how that huge 2nd tier would work with cutting...

Which one? And if the cake in the pic is completely white, how would you add the champagne? TIA :)

  • I like the first one the best. I would do a white cake with champagne flowers.

  • i would incorporate the first and second. ie. the flower on the top in the first (so you dont need a cake topper) and the petals of the second but perhaps a bit looser? but if i had to pick only one i like the 2nd best :)

Would you leave the ribbon the same color as the cake or make it champagne also?

  • They're all so beautiful! #2 is most my style, and I would do that one all in champagne (flowers and cake) if possible. I don't personally like stark white cakes.

But PPs suggestions are also very nice, and if white is what you want, go for that!

  • The second one is the most elegant and romantic looking one, that's my vote!  The first one is ok, too, but the flowers look very fake in that photo - maybe if they could get them to look more real it would be better - that is if you're using sugar flowers instead of fresh.  Also, buttercream should actually cost you a lot less than fondant.  Our venue is paying for our cake, but we asked for the price difference out of curiosity, and to get fondant, which is gross anyway, it would be significantly more money.  Go figure!

  • I LOVE #2 As is.

  • LOVE the second one. I think it's a great mix of classic with a modern twist. And it's interesting (and gorgeous) enough without have anything on the top of the top tier.

Yeah, my baker does flowers that look more real than that. I'm not a fan of real flowers in the cake, so it would probably be sugar flowers.

This exactly. :)  And, to answer your other question, I would leave the ribbon as is.
  • I'd pick #1 but ours looks a lot like #1 except with purple flowers and purple (fondant) ribbon
I like the flowers matching the ribbon personally

I also love #2- it's just a bit too modern for our wedding ;-)

And I'm a total buttercream fan so I'm with you on that one!

    Have fun picking
  • Number 2 is my choice. Elegant and modern, with a bit of whimsy thrown in there. I think its beautiful! It would be my choice hands down, the other two dont compare :P

  •  #2, mainly because it is very much like my cake. #1 is very pretty too though.
  • I like #2 the best. It seems the most "wedding-y"

  • I like #2 as well.  If you want to incorporate the champagne color into the cake, how about doing something like this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/41051118@N03/6224019040/  using the champagne color on the edges of the flowers to create this effect.  Just a touch of color to keep the classic lines and elegance.  :)
  • i love #2 though it's probably about the trendiest cake (thanks pinterest), out there right now!

but #3 is my fav. i love the shape and the ribbon.

I think this is why I'm hesitating getting it... I'm typically not a trendy person. But I figure if I'm going to be trendy with something, cake is probably the best place to do it. This isn't something that will affect the overall "timeless" look I want for my wedding photos.
