Good new-marriage license!

While meeting with the priest at the church where we are getting married, I took some notes that I just looked over and I wrote down "get marriage license 2 months before" and with the wedding being less than one month away, I totally panicked!

I called the town clerk in the town we're getting married in and she said that we could come in the day before the wedding if we wanted to, to apply for the license! Thank God!!!

FI has a busy work schedule so trying to get up to Maine (we're in MA) before 4:30 in the afternoon was going to be nearly impossible, but we'll both be in Maine the Friday before the wedding so we should be all set! YIPPEEE

Re: Good new-marriage license!

  • I would check and see if there is a waiting period after getting it.

We have to wait 72 hours after we get ours! If not then I know that would be such a blessing!
  • I asked about that because I had read somewhere on here that it was possible that there would be a waiting period, but she said that there wasn't.

I'm hoping to go even a few days before anyway, it we can both get out of work, but I'm less stressed about getting it done now, since we don't technically have to do it until the day before the wedding.

  • i was freaking out about this too recently, turns out in Colorado all they want is your drivers license and there's no waiting period.  the lady on the phone said it only takes 20 minutes and we could do it the day before!  haha

    lucky us!  :-D
  • Same with Rhode Island, takes about 10 minutes, you fill out a form and give your license and they type it up and give you an envelope to have the Priest send it back in :)

I even picked up a few certified copy forms so I could send those in as well to get copies to send to everyone for the name change.  They gave me a pre-addressed envelope for that too!

  • ours also had a 2 day waiting period.
  • MA has a 3 day waiting period... LAME!

We can get ours, but it's only "good" for 60 days, so I want to give us time to send it in once we're back from our honeymoon.

  • In MA it is a 3 day waiting period and it is good for 60 days. I would really check in your area, because what if they make a mistake on the license, and then it takes time to get corrected?

  • We had no waiting period, we were told to just give it to the officiant and as long as we get married within 60 days we are good, and that its the officiants job to mail it back in..not ours, otherwise its too easy to forge signatures etc, and the officiant is the one who is liscenced to verify that all the signatures were witnessed, that he has to send it in (and that once you give it to him, then as long as the marraige date is within 60 days, it doesnt matter if he sends it in that day or 5 months later....although you cant get any documentation if he doesnt send it in right away).
