How to "jazz" up this dress

My FMIL just bought her dress for the wedding and my Mom is feeling like hers "isn't as nice."  I totally disagree because FMIL and my Mom have totally different tastes and the dress FMIL picked out, would never be something my Mom would, but now my Mom is upset about her dress...ugh, she loved it before i showed her FMIL's dress!!!

So, now I'm attempting to save her from being upset by coming up with ways to "jazz" up her dress.

Here is what her dress looks like. I'm thinking maybe a brooch on the side to add some bling? But I'd love some other opinions/thoughts about what I (she) could do to help this situation.

(Its the dress all the way to the left of the screen and the color is aqua)

The dress kind of pulls to the side, with a little rouching around the middle and the top.

Re: How to "jazz" up this dress

  • I think a brooch would totally spice it up, or maybe a fancy statement necklace?
  • Well, I think a rhinestone broach would be a good idea, where all the rusching joins together.  However, if the dress if aqua, you don't want to do *too* much because I think that could come off looking prom-ish.

What about some elegant statement jewelry & some fun shoes?  What is it about FMILs dress that makes it "nicer"?

Another thought I had was maybe a silver lace shrug type thing...like this?

Or I can ask the tailor if they do any sort of beadwork at all and if they could maybe add some beading to parts of the dres....ugh I'm so frazzled now!

  • This is FMIl's dress. Its just more "sparkley" than my Moms. My Mom was the one who said it was nicer, and I'm guessing its because its sparkley and hers is not.

  • I agree with the necklace thing. I would get a nice necklace and maybe earrings. Also I think the brooch would be good just nothing huge or too gaudy do try to keep it a little simple.

I too would like to know what's better about your FMIL's dress?

To me, they are both beautiful. And they both choose dresses that were "them" so I think they both made great choices. The problem is my Mom, who thinks hers isn't as nice, even though I told her thats hers is beautiful and its more her style, where as my FMIL's isn't her style at all.

  • I think any kind of bling will dress it up nicely!

  • I think your moms looks better personally. I'm not crazy about the jacket/shrug thing but I do think one like PP found would be nice. I think if you added beading it wouldn't look right as in like it was added after the fact.
  • you mom's is nicer...show her this thread! hahahah. Seriously though, a silver or gold bolero mught be nice, but not needed.

I am amazed at the dresses a lot of you ladies are posting that your mothers got, you all must have some young hot moma's to be able to pull them off!

  • I think jewelry is the way to go. A brooch would be very pretty.  I agree with pps that I like your mom's dress better - it doesn't have a matronly look to it.

  • Thank you all. I just talked to my Mom and told her that both dresses are beautiful and the one my FMIL is not nicer than hers. I also mentioned adding some type of brooch or maybe a shrug and she likes the shrug idea.

I found this one that is ivory, beaded, and lacey and its also see through-ish so the blue of her dress would be seen through it. She seemed to like the idea of something covering her arms so maybe she can try this one and see if she likes it!

I also said that my FMIL's was more "matronly" and that its just more her style as opposed to my Mom. I really want her to feel beautiful in her dress because I really do think she looks great in it and I think its a great dress.

  • I really like that one. I think it would look really good with her dress and it just gives it a little something extra.
  • i agree with the posters that said your FMIL's dress is more matronly.  your mom's dress looks sizzling!  lol  :)  tell her to wear a pushup bra with it, that'll really set her apart...  i'm kidding, of course.

I like the idea of a statement necklace and maybe a bracelet to match.  That dress looks like it would look good with some big bracelet or bangles.  :)
  • I like the necklace idea. I agree that if you add too much to the dress it may look too promy.
