need opinions on menu

Last month, we picked out our menu.  It is sit-down and guests will choose their entree and send it back with the RSVP.  (Invites have been ordered already).

Today I was typing up our menu for my friend making them, and I realized that the glaze over the filet mignon choice is veal based (it is called veal demi-glace).  I know a lot of people have moral objections to veal, and I feel bad because there is no mention of this when choosing their entree (it just says filet mignon).

Do you guys think I should ask the venue not to put the glaze on top of it?  Would you be upset if you ordered the steak and came to find out there is veal in it?  I personally don't like the idea of eating veal, and have only tried it once.  But, honestly I don't think I'd be mad, and I'm sure I would eat it anyways.

But, I would like to hear others' opinions.
TIA.

  • I dont like eating veal,I havent eatten it since I was a child. FI though does eat it.  That being said, I dont think I would be upset that there was a veal glaze on my filet mignon.
While I guess it might be considered 'lying' to your guests... you could always just put "demi-glace" on the menu card. Though I guess then you run the chances of someone who does know purposefully telling someone who doesnt eat veal.....

Honestly though, I think anyone who is THAT morally against eating veal, probably doesnt eat a whole lot of red meat (or any meat) in general

  • I like the idea of having it as a choice on the steak if at all possible.  Maybe ask your venue if they can find a way to have it on the side.  I personally haven't eaten veal and prefer not to and probably wouldn't eat the filet with the sauce on it.  Also, maybe ask the venue if they can make the glaze with a different base...there are lots of demi-glaze options out there that would pair nicely with filet.  :)
  • Ditto PP. If one of your guests would get that upset if the demi-glacé is veal based, I doubt they're ordering veal anyway. Do you have a website? You could post about the veal there. I would also ask the venue if there are other options besides a veal base.

I wouldn't eat it....but I wouldn't eat it before the veal...so unless there may be an allergy/intolerence issue I don't think its a big deal, as long as you have some options for those non red meat eaters of us out there!

  • I would talk to the caterer to see if there is something else you can put on the filet mignon that is not veal based.

  • Just my opinion, and what I feel for ME... I love steak beef etc. But will absolutely never eat veal meat or even a veal glaze. So I would be very upset if I found out thats what it was. I know they say 'what you dont know wont hurt'. But I'd be upset.
