Hey crafty ladies

We finally ordered our save the dates!  Yay :)  We are doing STD bookmarks that look sort of like this:

I think that they will look more "bookmarky" if I put a tassel on them.  So my question is: should I use a string tassel like traditional bookmarks or a ribbon tassel?  This is what I mean:

OR

Also, do you have any suggestions as to where I should buy the ribbon or string tassels that I decide upon?  Thank you!

Both would look nice, but I'm liking the ribbon more for some reason. Not sure exactly why, but I feel like it goes with the style of it more. If you go with ribbon, I'm assuming you could buy it at any craft store. I think I've even seen tassles in the wedding sections at some stores (though only certain colors). Just my 2 cents!

I like the ribbon better, personally.  Like Kim said, you would be able to find ribbon in any craft store.  I know Michaels has a ton of selection in all different widths. HTH!

I prefer the string because it's more of a traditional bookmark look.

I actually prefer the string also. It will hold up with time better than the ribbon IMHO. LOVE it btw!!

I think the string is more traditional for a bookmark, but I think it would be more of a PITA to make (assuming you would make it with several threads of string?).  The ribbon has a more modern look IMO, but I think it would look good with the style of bookmark and it would be easier to make! You could easily find ribon with a design that would spruce it up a bit.

I just googled a bit and found that it would be pretty easy to find some type of material that would work for the string so you don't have to make it.  For example:

    http://www.ribbonjar.com/product_p/10006.htm

You could take something similar to that and just let it fray at the end to give it a tassel look.

Or you could do a pretty ribbon like this:

    http://www.ribbonjar.com/product_p/10648.htm

I know nothing about that website, but its the first one I came across :)

    Love those!

I think you could go either way, but I like the traditional tassel look too!  I would know for sure that it was a bookmark then - if it was a ribbon then I might just think it was decorative and hang it on my fridge.

You would buy the tassels somewhere vs. making them, right?

This!  For being an avid reader, I wouldn't recognize the ribbon as being a bookmark.

Ooohh, thanks for all those links!  Yes, if I go with the traditional string tassels, I would definitely definitely buy them "premade," not try to make them myself :)

Just realized that I haven't even asked FI his opinion on this, haha!

Do you think using the string tassels would prevent people from hanging them on their fridge if they wanted to?  Like, would it be too heavy?

I love the tassel.  I would just be worried about sending them in the mail since they are thicker than the ribbons.  But I would definitely use it as a book marker if it had the string tassel.

Pat Catans for buying stuff! Its the best!  I personally like ribbon, but I think to cut costs you can do w/o too.  Most ppl toss save the dates, and I would add that 50$ or so that you spend on ribbon into extras for the invtes!  JMO!

I don't think it would be too heavy to hang on a fridge.

This would be my thought process with the tassle - Oh look, Jen sent a STD that doubles as a bookmark!  How clever!  They must really like to read!  What a cute way of bringing a touch of themselves into this!

With the ribbon - wow, a STD with a ribbon.  I'm going to hang it on my fridge.

Honestly, the ribbon look would have never crossed my mind as being a bookmark before this thread.

Thanks Stace, that is really well put :)  And it's exactly what I'm going for!  I don't want people to think it's just a weird-shaped STD.  (They do say "bookmark the date" instead of "save the date," which will probably help, but even still...)  I think we'll probably go with the string tassels.

I'm late, but I love the design and "bookmark the date" wording. So cute! Oh, and tassels all the way.

Ok, one more question that I'm posting here so as not to be a total PW- is it totally tacky to use return address labels on STDs?  I'll be having my invites done by a calligrapher, and I'll address these STDs by hand, but is a label on the back of the envelope here in really bad taste?

I like the ribbon better.  I also think that it might be easier to mail them with a ribbon, which is flat, versus a bulky tassle.
  • edited December 2011
Nope. There is no tacky here. :)

Yeah, that was too short of a reply. :P    I don't think that using address labels is tacky at all! I say the easier the better. Does anyone disagree? (I dare ya!)

Ok, awesome.  Then I will make my first (free!) order from Vista Print, and get me some fancy labels :)
