Pittsburgh's Grand Hall at the Priory

Any opinions on the actual physical location of Pittsburgh's Grand Hall?  Pictures of the hall look amazing, they have a package that fits my needs perfectly, haven't scheduled an appointment to look at it yet, so my fiance and I did a drive by.... I was slightly taken aback by the area surrounding the venue.... any opinions or comments? Thanks!!!!!!

Re: Pittsburgh's Grand Hall at the Priory

  • The area is ...eh. I don't live far from there, and while it's basically safe, it's not pretty. My fiance and I stayed at the hotel for a special occasion last summer, and the people at the Priory were wonderful. That, and the place is gorgeous inside. We spent about an hour wandering around and exploring!

But yeah, the area. Again, it's not particularly pretty in spots, but it's really not bad.
  • Thanks! I think we'll go look at the place and if we really like it, i guess we'll discuss how important the area surround the venue really is.... The only reason that I'm particularly concerned is because my whole family is from Ohio and a lot of them haven't really seen Pittsburgh before.... I love it here and I want them to understand why I love it so much!
  • I live down the road from the Priory.  It's not awful but...it's basically the ghetto surrounding it.  My FI and I are actually considering buying a house now just to move out.

We live on the Northside on the Mexican War Streets (which is about a fifteen minute walk from the Priory) and haven't had any problems. There are several run down houses and a decent amount of people loitering outside Giant Eagle near the Priory - mainly jitney drivers. But there's also an Elk's Lodge that has great Wednesday nigjt events and a lot of good stuff going on and being developed on E Ohio. Would I buy a house right next to the Priory? Probably less likely although we will buy on the War Streets when I finish my residency. Would I hesitate to have an event there or even stay there as a guest? No. If you like it go for it! Plus, your guests will see the beauty of Pittsburgh very easily through its proximity to downtown, the bridges, rivers, and all of the Northside attractions like Warhol and PNC Park.

  • My FI lives by the Mexican War Streets as well and we haven't experienced any problems.  I agree with Flowerstar1023 about the loitering near Giant Eagle, but that is the extent to how it gets.  We are having our reception at the Grand Hall as well in May 2013 and would encourage taking a look, its SO nice with very nice people!
