Honeymoon ideas

I know we've talked about honeymoons a lot, but FI and I are kind of torn on ideas. We know we want to do a cross country road trip. But we're sad that we may not be able to bring the dog, that due to time limits we may not see everything we want for a fair amount of time, and we hate summer traveling. Both our previous road trips were during Decemeber/January and it was amazing. We were almost always the only people where ever we went. We went to DC last April with some friends and it kind of sucked how busy it was. We know that traveling during the summer means the tourist traffic will be horrible.

Here's our new, tentative plan... two honeymoons!

The first would be a week right after the wedding. We'd fly out Seattle, spend a day there, spend a day in Oregon, then spend the rest of the week and weekend driving down the California coast and hitting all the cool National Parks and cities along the way, doing day trips, then fly back home from San Deigo.

The second would be our road trip. We'd drive out to Washington again, then cut down and in to go to Utah and Nevada instead of California. This one would be pushed back until December, which is when we like to travel best. If we time it right, I'll accumulate enough vacation time for this double HM plan. FI work for a college as a ten month employee, so getting the summer week off is no big deal. For the winter trip he can take off a few weeks during the winter break than just make up the time over the summer instead, so it shouldn't matter.

This was our new discussion as of this morning and I'm just really excited and had to share!

Re: Honeymoon ideas

  • Go to your nearest National Park and buy the Passport book for like $10. So worth it. Ever National Park pasticipates. It looks like a real passport, but at every park visitor center there are stamps you get to stamp your book. It's like crack trying to find them all. Maybe the scaveger hunt style funsies will convince him. robcourtneytrip.wordpress.com- that's our book. We go bananas trying to find the crazy stamps.

  • Your "first" honeymoon from Seattle down to CA is similar to something friends of mine and I did right after our college graduation. We flew into Seattle and did Oregon, northern CA, Disneyland then drove out to Vegas and the grand conyon.

I would definitely hit up Multnomah Falls in Oregon. It's beautfil there! There's the large waterfalls and lots of smaller ones on the drive to it. A local told us about it and we decided to check it out. There were also a lot of hiking paths around there but we didn't do any of the big ones due to time. The redwood forest was great too. And there was a tree that had an area wide enough to drive a small car through so we drove our car through one of the trees for $5. Sorry if any of these were also on your list but I figured it couldn't hurt to add in my two cents. I'll try to think of more things we did along the way too.

There's a site called roadside america that has all kinds of hokey touristy things to do. They have maps of all 50 states with pins dropped where different things are. Think giant muffler man on the side of the road or the largest ball of twine. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/

FI and I are also thinking of maybe doing a roadtrip but we're not sure where yet. And in case you couldn't tell I love a good road trip.

  • Sweeeeet website! We love hokey tourist things. We did a u-turn on 81 in Kentucky to go to a place called Dinosuar world on a whim on our first trip and it was awesome and silly. The drive through tree was on our list, but depending on what size car we rent will we fit? I don't think FI's FJ Cruiser would. Hadn't heard of the waterfalls yet, so we'll definitely look into that!

  • Lol I was just reading a crazy blog aboud a couple doign 30 weddings in 3 years in different countrys all around the world and they drove down the CA coast in a huge camper van which fit through the tree so I'm sure any rental car will too.

That sounds like an awesome honeymoon! I'm from the Bay area so in different trips have done most of the coast but never all in one awesome trip. The drive is definitely beautiful. Let me know if you need any suggestions of specific things in places to check out in CA. I hope your planning to stop in Monterey/Carmel cause its along the drive and IMO one of the most beautiful places(maybe little biased it is where my wedding is lol).

  • Here's a pic of us going through the tree. It was in Myers Flat and we had a tiny toyota something or other. I'm sure there are other trees though. This one was also in a tiny (2010 census was 146 people) town that we somehow ended up in when we got a little lost.

I know exactly what you're talking about and I'm so jealous that you've been there. My fiance's brother lived on the Army base in Clarksville, KY, and when we went to visit him, I tried so hard to convince my fiance that going to Dinosaur World was an excellent use of our time.
  • We passed by Dinosaur World on our way to Nashville last year. I begged FI to stop but it was late and they were most likely closed. We had already done detours at a couple casinos before that and turned an 8 hour drive into a 12 hour drive.

  • Worth every penny of the $12 it cost to get in. There were only two other people there (yay winter trips) and we were like kids in a candy shop hoping over the chains and climbing on the dinosaurs even though there were hundreds of signs saying not to. Seriously, go back to KY and go.

  • Those road trips sound awesome! Maybe as a 1-year anniversary thing to introduce FI to the country more (and have gas money!).

We want to do Disney for our HM, but might try to put it off until August to see if the free dining plan is offered early enough.  I'm going to keep an eye out for a Groupon or something for two nights in Bar Harbor or Wells/Ogunquit I think, as a mini-HM right after the wedding.

</div><div>I just got back from Bar Harbor yesterday!  It's really beautiful there.  We always stay at the Llangolan Inn.  They're a bed and breakfast, but they also have a bunch of cottages that are about $100 per night.  The cabins have a mini kitchen so we always make dinner after hiking all day and then eat it while cuddling in bed.  I seriously love tiny one room cottages, they're so romantic!</div>
