Hi Ladies! Advice Please....

Hello ladies! I'm so excited to join you guys here on the boards. I've been lurking on here for a while but I am new to active planning and posting. I have a question about the need for a videographer. Looking at the Budgeter tool, the videographer is allotted the same amount as the photographer but for some reason I don't have any urge to have a video made. Do people still watch wedding videos? Will i regret it if i don't?? Looking forward to planning along with you all!

Re: Hi Ladies! Advice Please....

  • HAHA see I've toyed with this idea for and against a videographer...

    Pros (for me)
-Captures live memories, sound, emotion, etc of the 'important' moments even more so than photos can.
-The day will be a blur (I'm sure) so it would be nice to have something to replay visually to look at again.

    Cons (for me)
    Can be costly

I'll (we) will probably only watch it once received after the wedding, on our anniversary then years down the road. BUT it would be something nice to have should you want to watch it more to reminisce.

At first I was all 'Heck no!" to it then some people gave me some insight and opinions that I never thought of and made me kinda want it. FI and I thought of an idea to get the video and keep costs down - we might ask our brother-in-law to videotape it with his fancy videocamera. (If we were to go this route, then we would only ask him to tape the ceremony only and I'm totally ok with a simple set up and shoot from one angle so he can set it and forget it sort of thing.)

It's something I'm still debating. If our photographer has a cost effective option for videography as well, I might just get it so my BIL can enjoy himself, even though I know he would give us flack for hiring someone.

  • I will not be using one.  I have a friend that will do a "home" movie but not willing to spend that amount of money on something to watch once maybe twice.

It's just up to you.  If its something you want then go for it!  If not put that money into something else.  :)

  • We're not using one. I'd personally rather remember the day as it was for me and look back on the pictures. Videographers can be very costly, and I've seen some are pretty intrusive. I don't really want to watch hours of family and friends drunk dancing. ;)

For my MOH, however, she is having a videographer and it is one of their most important expenses. Most of her family lives in Europe and will not be able to travel here for her wedding, so it is very important to her to be able to share the day with those that won't be able to make the trip.

  • I'm not doing it.  I will have the memories with me and the photos will be more than enough to cover the day.  I just don't have it in the budget to have a videographer, especially since I went over budget on my photographer.

It's a big day, but just one day.  Videography is expensive and I just cant justify that expense for what you get in return.

  • Thank goodness!! I really don't see the point but apparently that was wedding blasphemy to my grandmother! hah. Thanks so much! I don't feel like I'm crazy now!

  • Also not doing video, we wanted to use the money on the party.  I'm sure we will have plenty of photographs between our photographer and with everyone having digital cameras to remember the day.

  • Well to change the curve a little bit, we will be having one! Even though we have a photographer and will have a ton of pics as well from friends and family, i think it will be fun to be able to go back and watch it all unfold on Video. Alot of videographers will allow you to pick apart their packages to make them more affordable. For instance, if you feel that you only want the ceremony captured you're more than welcome to do so. I say if closer to the date you can fit it in, go for it. :)

  • If I had the budget, I'd probably do one.  Currently, since my budget is pretty strict, it was the first thing to get the ax.  It was an easy decision since we barely watch any of the home videos we already have!

As much as I'd love to have a videographer, I know it's just not in the budget. I'd rather put that money towards a better photographer (or our reception!)

Unless we win it at a bridal show, we won't have one.

  • i guess im the lone ranger on this one. I love the idea of  having a video. My siblings all got married before me and we love having their videos. And their Kids LOVE seeing the video of their parents getting married. I think its a nice touch. Having someone film in your family is a great alternative, but remember they will be participating in the event and may not want to have the camera on them all day. We did this for my sisters wedding shower and what we got was not at all what we were hoping for (shaky hand haha)   thats just my piece it depends on what you want but once that day is gone there is no getting that back

  • We decided to hire a videographer for the ceremony only. It was inexpensive and we wanted to be able to look back in 5, 10, 25 years, etc. and "re-live" that day. But it's definitely not something we would have done if we hadn't had the budget for it.

Melissa, I never thought of this option...this is a really good idea. We've got a good friend who has volunteered his videography services, but he's on the guest list too, so I don't want him to miss the whole party because he's busy filming. After reading this though, I think we'll just ask him to film the ceremony and maybe the first dance/cake cutting, and then call it a day.
  • i also think we are planning on getting one just for the ceremony. I know it will be a whilwind of a day and I want to be able to relive it.
