HAVE to vent.

So I just finished my teaching degrree in December and have been working temporarily as an aide at the school district I student taught at. I have been looking for a teaching job every day for the last 2 months and seriously I have only had 3 things come up. I applied at all of them and one of the places had 2 openings, Kindergarten and Preschool. Then I found out that they hired in house for the kindergarten job. So i'm still left hanging about the preschool one.

THEN.. I applied to be a director of a preschool where I was told I would just approve the other, less educated, teacher's lesson plans and I would just watch kids all day. No teaching involved but my name and reputation is on the line. Honestly, I don't know what to do anymore. I am so frustrated. I worked very, incredibly hard to finish school and now, for what? Even if I did get hired at this preschool the job pays like $1800 a month. Which is more than I make now, but I would like to start a CAREER, not a job where I'm going to end up on food stamps.

It's so sad that in this day and age you can go to college, get a degree, and STILL need federal assistance because you can't find employment. Ugh. So Sad. I'm so frustrated!!

I feel you. I have my teaching license for New York, where it's impossible to find a job too. I actually found one last year (I had to teach only 30% in my area though, the rest in an area I'm not certifies in, it sucked). Than this year they cut me to 20% total, which I couldn't finacially do. One of my BM's is a teacher and just found out she's getting laid off at the end of the year and she just had a baby. My MOH is down in VA interviewing for jobs right now because there isn't anything here. It's so bad in NY that our capital, Albany, is holding trainings for people with teaching degrees who can't find work so they can get jobs doing something else vaguely related to their content area. I myself, when I opted not to go back last fall, couldn't find anything else. My content area is health, with is small. Each district only has one or two health teachers. So I took a job at an addictions and chemical dependency council where I now do community education. I go into school districts and work regularly with a local college doing alcohol and drug prevention education. I'd still like to end up back in the classroom someday, but until then I'm happy to be doing something in my field. 

A superintendent at a district by me was telling me about how when they post an elm ed job in the paper they get about 1500 applicants, so they only post on their district webpage (where they still get about 300). He said he makes his first round of cuts based on the writing ability executed in the cover letter. It's nuts. It's bad just about everywhere and still getting worse.

I went through the same thing! I actually posted about this in a vent last week, but I know exactly what you're going through.  I graduated in May with my Masters Degree in elementary and special education.  I couldn't find anything in Philadelphia!  The entire state is not hiring at all.  I was always told I could get a special ed job, but apparently everyone lied to me!  I must have filled out 500 applications and I was such a mess.  So in October I gave up and started applying for community special education positions.  Within 2 weeks I was hired full time at a non profit as a job coach for high school students with disabilities.  I have a pretty good salary (much more than a daycare job, which I almost took too!), and benefits.  I don't have to write lesson plans - I just work one on one with students while they try to find and keep jobs.  I love it!  I still get to help kids even though I'm not in a classroom.  I'm sorry about what you're going through.  Hopefully more jobs will open up this summer!  Good luck with your job search!
