Registry question...

I know it's too soon to register but I need some opinions. My FI and I don't necessarily agree on a registry. We have been living together for about 2 1/2 years so he doesn't want to register. His reasoning is we don't really need anything (which he's right) and if we do we just go out and get it. We both make decent money so he's right about that too but I don't think it's fair to our guests not to give them the opportunity to give a gift rather then money. Plus being an Interior Designer im very picky about what goes in our house so if we dont register and get gifts the probability of them actually getting used is slim to none (I really didnt mean to sound like a snob just then, sorry its just what I do, design is my life). My sister (MOH) thinks we should just do a greenback which I've never even heard of. What do you ladies think?

Re: Registry question...

  • I honestly dont even know what a greenback is. If it is some form of asking for cash, i think ettiquitte wise it is usually not a well received idea.

I agree with mrsk. Creating a registry is a good time to get upgrades. FI and I have lived together for about 2 and a half years too, however, a lot of our stuff is from FIs bachelor days since he lived on his own before I moved in, so I have A LOT of upgrading to do from dishes, pots and pans, right down to my towels. I am also incredibly picky, but thats the point of a registry, to get what you want and not just a bunch of random crap. We also can just go out and buy the stuff, but I have been holding off for this very reason.

If I was you, I would create a really small registry with some things you both like and will use, I think people will get the hint that way that you would prefer cash.

My FI and I have lived together for a while now too so we don't need a lot of things. We'll register for some upgrades as well as somethings we want, but not enough to buy ourselves, haha. We're also planning on using myregistry.com so we can register at Lowes. We bought a fixer upper last fall and we'd rather register for bathroom vanities, floor tile, and countertops that flatware and blenders (which we already own two of).

  • I agree with everyone. FI and I have also been living together for about 2 years and we have everything we need. We're going to use the registry to get matching silverware and upgrade things like towels and sheets. It won't be very big but we're also hoping that by keeping it fairly small people will get the hint that we would rather have cash for a house. Also I've never heard of a greenback registry but if it's asking for money I would skip it and just stick to a small registry.

  • Ditto what everyone else has said. I just googled greenback registry, and from what I can tell, it's basically just telling people you want cash. This is generally frowned upon by...well...pretty much everyone, I think.

I also live with my fiance, and while we don't really need anything, there are things we'd like to upgrade (goodbye, Ikea silverware!!). We plan on doing a small registry with the things we'd like to upgrade/things that would be nice to have, but since most of our guests are aware that we bought a house last year, we're figuring that most people will give us cash or gift cards for Lowe's or whereever. I'd definitely recommend doing at least a small registry, otherwise, you're going to end up with a bunch of vases and picture frames.
  • I wm with you Emily, I cant wait for the Ikea silverware to go!

[QUOTE]If it were me, I would register for things that I could use as an upgrade in my home... such as pots and pans or something like that. I've gotten the impression that if you don't register, people will either get the hint that you want cash or they'll just pick out what they think you should have, so if it were me, I'd just pick out stuff I know I'd like instead of risking getting something you have absolutely no use for. That's just my opinion :) FI and I will prob register end of summer/fall-ish, but we also don't have a lot of stuff, as we're living with my parents while we wait for our house. Personally, I'm excited to register for all new things!

This is what FI and I will be regisgtering for, since we have lived together for the past 4 years and have spent the last year in the house we bought. We will be registering to get rid of our hodge podge, outdated dishes and glasses.

  • Thanks everyone for your input. You all confirmed exactly what I was thinking. I can definitely find things to register for, I actually already have a list going in my head. Now I just have to convince my FI that I'm right! :)

  • Just tell him he can hold the scanner and scan everything, my FI has told me many times that is his job.
