NWR: Book Lovers

I love reading books! So much so I gave myself a New Years Resoltion to read more this year and have a goal of reading 25 books (I think I read 2 last year and I don't normally do NY Resolutions lol)

Just wondering if there was anyone else out there who enjoys a good book or two. I'm always looking for something good to read and love recommendations!

Feel free to jump right in!

1. Last book(s) read
1a. Did you enjoy it and/or would you recommend it to others?
2. Book currently reading
3. Book(s) I want to read next

Re: NWR: Book Lovers

  • 1. Last book(s) read
    - The Hunger Games Trilogy

1a. Did you enjoy it and/or would you recommend it to others?
    - HECK YES! I loved the series and have recommended it to TONS of people who also enjoyed it. (Movie is coming out in March for the 1st book). It's a Dystopian novel and is written for youth adults and I was pleasantly surprised since it's out of the 'norm' of what I read!

    2. Book currently reading
-The Divergent. Similar to HG as it's also dystopian and has similarities. Also finding it quite good. I believe it has been picked up for a movie as well and the author is curently working on a second book?

    3. Book(s) I want to read next
-Next up I am going to try to read A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard and The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I heard the Stolen Life is a hard but really good read. As for the Help, I've watched the movie when it came out and now I'm going to read the book (Usually I read then watch the movie but I didnt realize it was a book first until I got to the theatre lol oh wells)

  • 1. Last book: Probably "House Rules" by Jodi Picoult.

1a. I absolutely loved it. It's about a boy who has Asperger's Syndrome, which people are becoming a lot more aware of now. My brother has it so I relate to this book big time and would recommend it to EVERYBODY! I love love love her books.

    2. Current: I was working on actually reading Wicked (like the musical) for a while, but I can't find my copy. It got lost in moving back and forth during winter break. Hopefully, I'll find it again and be able to continue it soon.

    3. Next: Lone Wolf by Jodi Picoult. I'm absolutely not into the fantasy crap that people tend to be obsessed with. I think Twilight is a total joke (sorry fans, just my opinion), but I have to read this simply because it's by her. I've read all her other books, and this will be no exception.

  • 1. "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" by Philip Carlo
1a. It's def an interesting story, but the writing is horrible. Lots of repetitive descriptions and overly romanticized scenes. I got through it in just a few days, wouldn't necessarily recommend based on the writing, but if you can get through that it's a good story. I think it's getting turned into a movie, and Mickey Rourke is playing the lead.

    2. Current: working through "20 Under 40: Stories from the New Yorker", I love love love short stories. Def recommend this.
I'm also working on "Infinite Jest", started it over the summer, but since my schedule has really vamped up I've put it aside. It's def a tome and a heavy read, but I'm liking it so far. I'm itching to be able to attack it again, but prob won't be until this summer.

    3. Next: if I have time before picking up "Infinite Jest" I may read "The Year of Magical Thinking" by Joan Didion. I tried reading it ~2 yrs ago, but it was just after a friend's sudden death and I couldn't get through the first couple pages without having a breakdown...sooo it's been on my shelf for a while.

@blferguson totally agree w/ Twilight...it's fun escapism for me as a 25 yr old, but it's absolutely horrible writing, and really misogynistic to boot. I haven't really gotten into Picoult, but I may take a peak after your rec of "House Rules". in high school I was a mentor for an autistic boy, it's still one of the best experiences of my life.

  • I absolutely have to ditto Hunger Games!! One of my favorites!! They're kind of a quick read, but mostly because I couldn't put it down! I'm about half way through The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Apparently it's supposed to get very good in a while, but the first couple hundred pages are super slow. I've also just started I am Number Four, recommended to me by some high school students. Good so far, but I'm not very far into it.

  • I love to read as well! FI got me a NOOK Tablet for Christmas and it was probably the BEST gift I could have gotten! (i could use some nook friends for anyone else who has one! lol)

One of the Best authors I think is Emily Giffin. I HIGHLY suggest you read "Something Borrowed" by her! It was such a good story!! For those of you who are going to say you've seen the movie, The movie gives it absolutely no justice! I also suggest reading Emily's other books! They are definitley pager turners!

Also, "Water for Elephants" is a really good book! again, the movie does it no justice!

  • The Help- I read the book a couple years ago and LOVED it. I watched the movie a couple week ago, and it was good but the book was way better. I always think that though, I think there are a couple of key parts that they left out of the movie.

Emily Giffin books- I LOVE THEM. all of them. Of course something borrowed and something blue go together, but all of the other books are stand alone books. I love books that can make you laugh and make you cry.

I dont have a whole lot of time to read between school and work. Usually during the summer when I dont have homework, I read a lot.

I think I finished all 3 books from the HG series in less than 2 weeks. It was soooo hard to put down!

LMAO! Right after I finished the HG I downloaded that book to my kobo (Cdn Kindle version) and I found it soooo hard to get into. That's too funny that you say pretty much the same thing I thought. I personally put it back down again because I think I was looking for something AS capitvating as the Hunger Games and that book definitely isnt. My friend is further into it than I am and she is still saying the same thing. I will try picking it up again in the summer to give it another chance as it's supposed to be great.

    LOVE LOVE LOVE her!!!

If you like her you should also check out Sophie Kinsella andddd there is another author who escapes me but I'll edit when I get home and check my bookcase lol.  I love chick-lit books for awesome, light reads.

ETA - I have a kobo (canadian Kindle - that's my best comparison but I think the kindle is better lol) and I have ALOT of books for it (My FI has a source for downloads so I get alot of them for free) I don't mind at all putting the book into the format you need for it (Mine is EPub - But I use a web based conversion thing so it can go into any format) and emailing it. I'm happy to save others money while I am =)

If you liked the Hunger Games book you should check out Divergent. It's pretty good and capitvating like HG.

I have a HUGE (growing) list of books I want to get and read. It's slightly embarassing how much I love books haha But I am always on the hunt for books that others recommend and add them to the list (As I have done with some of the above suggestions!)

  • I just started Hunger Games last night -- I couldn't put it down and read over 100 pages.  I'm pretty much obsessed with it and it's all I could think about at work today.  Welp, I'm off to go read. :)
  • Past: Just read the Millenium series since I saw the dragon tattoo... LOVED it

Current: Finished Ender's game so I am about to start the 2nd book.  But I am reading Something Borrowed for now

Future:  Hunger games is a definite, I also wanna read Game of Thrones.

Basically, I haven't read any book voluntarily since Harry Potter several years ago.  I was at a loss for ideas to give my FI for christmas soooo I decided I should start reading (something other than scientific papers lol)

1a. Did you enjoy it and/or would you recommend it to others? DO I!? Everyone I talk to who I know loves to read I tell them they must read it. It's so beautifully written and it is both heart warming and heart breaking. Wonderful
    2. Book currently reading. James Patterson's Jack and Jill
    3. Book(s) I want to read next. I started the entire Cross Series by James Patterson at the begining because I read books here and there.

I edit (and read) a wide range of commercial women's fiction, romance and young adult.

If you want I can send you a list of the books I have and if you want any of them I can put it in a zip and email it to you. I can also take a request or two if there is any books you'd like me to have him look for you lol

  • I know downloading books for free is enticing...but it's stealing. Authors receive zero compensation for pirated files, and unlike musicians, barely make money to pay the bills as it is (besides huge names like James Patterson, etc.). Also, all of the staff working on those books relies on the sales to pay our salaries (which are meager as it is). Please consider purchasing books and ebooks. My job depends on it.

    End PSA. :)

  • The Help is by far one of the best books! The story is so incredible, and the relationships that form in it are amazing as well! Its a real eye opener to the way the world was just a short time ago, and can still be at times today! Also another i can recommend is My Sister's Keeper. If you have not read that one you really should! I have never had so much emotion reading a book as I did with that one! Dee, i did get your email, thank you! I wrote back and and added you to my address book so thatyou do not end Up iin spam!

The amount of books I have in my house is crazy! I purchase books ALL the time so I can't say that I've downloaded books for years.

I agree with you but I also have a tight budget (due to the wedding of couse) so spending loads of money on books is just not in it (lol books as wedding favours? HA) so I have to make due with what I have. That being said, I don't plan on stopping purchases all together (online ebooks or actual books) but I just can't buy them as frequently at the moment. And I'm impatient, if I can't get a book online for 'free' then I will just buy it if it's something I really want to read.

I respect you and your job and I didn't mean to offend you in any way possible. I would love to have infinite amounts of money to buy books all the time to support the author and everyone else who contributes from the books conception to it hitting the stores shelf. (Oh and I'd buy lots of enteraining dishes/platters and stuff like that as that is my other splurge I can't resist)
